Moments later, the text he just sent arrives on his other, more conventional phone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The scene was, honestly, a little dull. But that\u2019s because the interesting part \u2014 the satellite that received the text and routed it to a normal phone \u2014 was out of sight, about 485 miles overhead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Tucked away inside that brick were the same satellite connectivity parts that will appear in a wave of new smartphones starting in the second half of 2023. (Don\u2019t worry: They won\u2019t be any chunkier than usual.) And unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/09\/14\/iphone-14-review\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple\u2019s iPhones<\/a>, which offer satellite service only in case of emergency, devices that use Qualcomm\u2019s Snapdragon Satellite technology will be able to send standard text messages via satellite to anyone \u2014 not just emergency responders, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said in an interview with The Washington Post.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cFor you to be able to say, \u2018No matter where I am, I can send a message and I am connected,\u2019 I think that\u2019s powerful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">This push into satellite communications \u2014 powered by a partnership with Iridium Communications, which operates a constellation of 66 satellites \u2014 isn\u2019t a new concept.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Apple\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/15\/iphone-satellite-sos\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emergency SOS via satellite feature<\/a> is live in six countries. A partnership between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/08\/30\/spacex-t-mobile-starlink-satellite\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">T-Mobile and Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX<\/a> is expected to bear fruit sometime this year, and AT&amp;T is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-05\/at-t-ceo-says-his-satellite-phone-service-has-lead-over-musk-s?srnd=industries-telecom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exploring phone-to-satellite connectivity<\/a> with an outfit called AST SpaceMobile.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The catch with some of those satellite features is that they have built-in audiences \u2014 you have to be an iPhone owner or pay T-Mobile for your wireless service. Qualcomm and Iridium\u2019s vision is a little different: Any phone maker that buys the former\u2019s premium chipsets for its devices can pay a little extra to connect to the latter\u2019s satellites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">And because Qualcomm\u2019s chipsets are commonly used in smartphones made by Samsung, Motorola and other brands sold around the world, many more people will be able to fire off messages from cellular dead zones starting this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">But that\u2019s not to say anyone with a Qualcomm-powered phone will get to try this feature. To start, it will be available only in phones that use Qualcomm\u2019s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, a high-powered package meant for expensive smartphone models. Over time, Qualcomm aims to bake satellite connectivity into more-moderately priced chipsets and phones, but Amon would not say when.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Meanwhile, some of the first smartphones to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset have <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2022\/11\/the-worlds-first-snapdragon-8-gen-2-phone-is-the-vivo-x90-pro-plus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gone on sale<\/a> overseas, well before the satellite features are slated to go live. While the chipsets in those early devices contain many of the radio components needed to talk to Iridium\u2019s satellites, they do not contain all of them \u2014 which means they can\u2019t be updated to use satellite features down the road.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In other words, if you\u2019re thinking about buying a non-Apple smartphone and want to be able to get in touch with<b> <\/b>friends and loved ones when you\u2019re nowhere near a cell tower, you may want to hold off for a while.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">That wait, however, could be worth it \u2014 and that\u2019s mostly thanks to Iridium. The McLean, Va.-based company has been putting satellites into orbit since the late 1990s, and the way those satellites are oriented around Earth means you\u2019ll be able to fire off a message from research bases in the Antarctic, the middle of the Indian Ocean and beyond.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cThere is never a spot on Earth that doesn\u2019t have coverage,\u201d Iridium CEO Matthew Desch said in an interview. As long as you have a clear view of the sky, the only situation where you wouldn\u2019t be able to send a satellite message is if you tried somewhere it\u2019s prohibited by the government \u2014 like Iran and North Korea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">By contrast, Apple\u2019s Emergency SOS via satellite operates only in the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany and Ireland \u2014 plus a swath of coastal water around them, if there is any. Even if you have an iPhone 14 that\u2019s capable of communicating with a satellite, you can\u2019t do it unless you\u2019re physically in one of those countries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<h3 data-qa=\"article-header\" class=\" pb-sm pt-lgmod\" id=\"GVKKJS6GNNDC5L63XFUFOZBBL4\">\n<p>How you may use satellite connections<\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The ability to stay in touch anywhere in the world with a standard (if pricey) smartphone sure seems appealing \u2014 but how do you actually use it?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">That really depends on what you\u2019re trying to do. If you want to contact help while away from cellular networks, there are two options: You can start the SOS process from your phone\u2019s lock screen or by trying to call emergency services. (There may be more places on your phone where you initiate an SOS, but that\u2019s a decision Qualcomm is leaving to device makers.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">After that, the messages you send will be routed to a response center in Texas owned by Garmin \u2014 yes, the GPS and fitness-watch people \u2014 where operators will collect information and coordinate with emergency responders. The costs involved, however, aren\u2019t set in stone: Qualcomm\u2019s Grilli said emergency messages \u201cwill not be very expensive,\u201d if they cost anything at all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The story is slightly different for person-to-person messages. When you try to send a text via satellite, the process is straightforward \u2014 type your message and follow an on-screen guide to make sure your phone is pointing at a satellite. Desch, Iridium\u2019s CEO, says that each of the satellites completes a full orbit in about 100 minutes and that it shouldn\u2019t take more than eight to 12 minutes before one moves into range.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">But those messages almost certainly will cost you, although it\u2019s not clear how much just yet. That\u2019s another decision Qualcomm will punt to device makers, as well as to any messaging services (such as WhatsApp or Telegram) that want to embrace satellite communication.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">What\u2019s also not clear is how customers will be able to choose between different satellite services if their phone supports more than one.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Even as key questions about the cost and experience of chatting via satellite linger, Qualcomm and Iridium are looking forward to the next step: making sure satellite communication isn\u2019t limited to our phones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cWe talked about phones, but there\u2019s no reason it couldn\u2019t be your laptop,\u201d Amon said, before turning his attention to another crucial class of products. \u201cThink about the ability to notify that an air bag has been deployed, or the ability to call emergency services, or to be able to remotely unlock your car.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">For now, it\u2019s not clear if Qualcomm and Iridium are actively courting the Dells and General Motors of the world.
