The company plans to launch its first sets in the spring.<\/p>\n<p>The move might seem like a head scratcher given Roku\u2019s success with licensing its smart TV software to third-party TV builders. By leaning on the likes of TCL, Hisense, and Sharp, Roku has become the <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=111346X1569484&amp;url=https:\/\/www.tvtechnology.com\/news\/roku-tv-remains-the-top-selling-smart-tv-operating-system-in-the-us&amp;sref=https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/1446994\/why-roku-is-making-its-own-smart-tvs.html&amp;xcust=3-1-1446994-1-0-0\" rel=\"nofollow\">top-selling TV operating system in the United States<\/a>. Thinking through it, though, Roku still has plenty of good reasons to get into the TV business itself.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-simple-choice-for-tv-buyers\">A simple choice for TV buyers<\/h2>\n<p>Buying a TV can be an exhausting process. Major brands such as Samsung and Sony offer upwards of a dozen models for every screen size, and distinguishing between them requires you to understand a glossary of complex technical jargon.<\/p>\n<p>Roku, by contrast, will offer just two models for each screen size: \u201cSelect\u201d will be the budget option, while \u201cPlus\u201d will offer more advanced features\u2013including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/579346\/roku-voice-remote-pro-review.html\">Roku\u2019s best remote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While this approach will be a non-starter if you\u2019re seeking a certain panel type (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/628217\/eyes-on-with-samsungs-innovative-qd-oled-tv.html\">QD-OLED<\/a>) or very specific features, Roku\u2019s in a great position to offer a simpler choice. Presumably, the company knows what kinds of existing Roku TVs are most popular, and it\u2019s tailoring its lineup to meet those mainstream needs.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"more-opinionated-products\">More opinionated products<\/h2>\n<p>Whereas some cheaper Roku TVs don\u2019t support voice control, <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=111346X1569484&amp;url=https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/roku-tv-select-premium-televisions-140014570.html&amp;sref=https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/1446994\/why-roku-is-making-its-own-smart-tvs.html&amp;xcust=3-1-1446994-1-0-0\" rel=\"nofollow\">Engadget reports<\/a> that Roku <em>will <\/em>include voice remotes with all of its televisions. Apparently the company feels that voice control is an important enough feature to include regardless of the cost. (Someone tell that to whoever\u2019s in charge of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/582529\/roku-express-review-a-nice-gift-for-your-frenemies.html\">Roku Express<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, one can imagine Roku using its own TVs to emphasize other novel features, akin to how Amazon includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/1207427\/amazons-new-fire-tv-devices-steal-the-best-ideas-from-everyone-else.html\">hands-free voice control and an ambient photo frame mode in its Omni TVs<\/a>. Roku\u2019s announcement says it will use its own TV line to \u201cenable future smart TV innovations,\u201d so it might eventually think up new features that other TVs don\u2019t offer.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"smoother-support\">Smoother support<\/h2>\n<p>Over the years, I\u2019ve fielded several complaints from readers about Roku TVs from TCL and other manufacturers. 2021\u2019s Roku OS 10.5 update was particularly problematic, as it caused <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=111346X1569484&amp;url=https:\/\/community.roku.com\/t5\/Features-settings-updates\/OS-10-5-Roku-TV-model-7XXX-experiencing-loading-channel-issues\/td-p\/738115\/highlight\/true&amp;sref=https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/1446994\/why-roku-is-making-its-own-smart-tvs.html&amp;xcust=3-1-1446994-1-0-0\" rel=\"nofollow\">channel-loading issues<\/a> and problems with <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=111346X1569484&amp;url=https:\/\/community.roku.com\/t5\/Discussions\/OS-10-5-Motion-Smoothing-Issues-on-new-TCL\/td-p\/752105&amp;sref=https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/1446994\/why-roku-is-making-its-own-smart-tvs.html&amp;xcust=3-1-1446994-1-0-0\" rel=\"nofollow\">turning off motion smoothing<\/a>. I\u2019ve also heard from users who can <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=111346X1569484&amp;url=https:\/\/community.roku.com\/t5\/Discussions\/TCL-S515-not-outputting-Dolby-Atmos-over-ARC\/td-p\/776477&amp;sref=https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/1446994\/why-roku-is-making-its-own-smart-tvs.html&amp;xcust=3-1-1446994-1-0-0\" rel=\"nofollow\">no longer get Dolby Atmos support on TCL TVs<\/a>, and some who\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=111346X1569484&amp;url=https:\/\/community.roku.com\/t5\/Roku-mobile-app\/Roku-app-missing-expert-settings-on-IPhone\/td-p\/568957&amp;sref=https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/1446994\/why-roku-is-making-its-own-smart-tvs.html&amp;xcust=3-1-1446994-1-0-0\" rel=\"nofollow\">lost access to Expert Picture Settings<\/a> in Roku\u2019s mobile app.<\/p>\n<p>Bugs happen, and <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=111346X1569484&amp;url=https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/tcl-update-fixes-google-tv-performance-issues-103044084.html&amp;sref=https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/1446994\/why-roku-is-making-its-own-smart-tvs.html&amp;xcust=3-1-1446994-1-0-0\" rel=\"nofollow\">Roku\u2019s not alone in dealing with them<\/a>, but by making its own TVs, Roku might have an easier time solving problems when they arise. Users, meanwhile, won\u2019t have to worry about the TV maker and Roku passing the buck back and forth. If something goes wrong with a Roku-made TV, you\u2019ll know exactly who to blame.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"better-bundling\">Better bundling<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond its smart TVs and streaming players, Roku is trying to build out a broader ecosystem with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/579542\/roku-streambar-pro-review.html\">soundbars<\/a>, speakers, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/1350598\/roku-partners-with-walmart-and-wyze-to-sell-smart-home-devices.html\">smart home devices<\/a>. Given that Roku already sells <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=111346X1569484&amp;url=https:\/\/www.roku.com\/products\/audio\/roku-streambar-wireless-bass-bundle&amp;sref=https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/1446994\/why-roku-is-making-its-own-smart-tvs.html&amp;xcust=3-1-1446994-1-0-0\" rel=\"nofollow\">soundbar, subwoofer, and surround-sound bundles<\/a>, throwing in a TV seems like the next logical step. That kind of bundling is unlikely to happen with other TV makers, many of which have their own soundbars to peddle instead.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"profit-protection\">Profit protection<\/h2>\n<p>According to a report in late 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=111346X1569484&amp;url=https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/the-battle-of-the-streaming-gatekeepers-heats-up&amp;sref=https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/1446994\/why-roku-is-making-its-own-smart-tvs.html&amp;xcust=3-1-1446994-1-0-0\" rel=\"nofollow\">from The Information<\/a>, other companies are getting more serious about stealing TV market share from Roku. Google, for instance, was reportedly paying TV makers up to $15 per unit to include its Google TV software, whereas Roku was only paying up to $8 per unit. (In case it\u2019s not obvious, they\u2019re willing to pay because they can make more money on targeted ads and subscriptions in the long run.)<\/p>\n<p>For Roku, making its own TVs could be a hedge against rising costs to license out its software to other companies.
