On the first day of 2023, NASA officials warned that China\u2019s lunar ambitions could soon land its National Space Administration (CNSA) on the moon, allowing the country to dominate precious resources.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a fact: we\u2019re in a space race,\u201d NASA Administrator and former astronaut Bill Nelson told<\/a> Politico in an interview. \u201cAnd it is true that we better watch out that they don\u2019t get to a place on the moon under the guise of scientific research.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nelson went on to say that China could very well attempt to keep the US away from resource-rich regions on the moon\u2019s surface upon arriving there. The country has been particularly ambitious as of late, opening a new Earth-orbiting space station<\/a> late last year (and already drafting plans<\/a> for expansion). Just a month later, China\u2019s main space contractor\u2014the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC)\u2014publicly outlined<\/a> a set of goals designed to make the country one of the world\u2019s top aerospace powers by 2030. One involves landing taikonauts on the moon by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s more recent aspirations line up with a statement<\/a> it made back in 2019 regarding the construction of an \u201cEarth-moon space economic zone.\u201d According to China\u2019s own Ministry of Science and Technology, the country aimed to extract value from lunar resources to the tune of $10 trillion in economic gain per year. This statement prompted American policy analysts to warn that establishing such a zone would give China the ability to \u201cwrite the rules and set standard operating procedures of who has access [to the moon].\u201d<\/p>\n

Now it\u2019s especially important that the US meet its own space goals, according to Nelson. Last year\u2019s Artemis I mission sent an unmanned spacecraft on a 25-day journey around the moon and back<\/a> after a number of delays. NASA is said to have gotten the funding it needed from Congress to support its next two lunar missions, Artemis II and Artemis III\u2014it just needs a great deal of equipment that\u2019s still in the development phase. Nelson warns that further lunar delays will only place the US behind China as the race heats up.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s entirely possible they could catch up and surpass us, absolutely,\u201d Space Force Lieutenant General Nina Armagno said<\/a> late last year during China\u2019s 10th Shenzhou space station crew launch. \u201cThe progress they\u2019ve made has been stunning\u2014stunningly fast.\u201d<\/p>\n
