Today, we\u2019re relaxing our ads policy for cause-based ads in the US. We also plan to expand the political advertising we permit in the coming weeks,\u201d the tweet said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">A second tweet clarified that the company would first ensure that its approach \u201cto reviewing and approving content protects people on Twitter.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/22\/twitter-advertiser-exodus-musk\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_8\">Advertisers are dropping Twitter. Musk can\u2019t afford to lose any more.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Twitter did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Twitter has long taken what it described as a principled stance against political advertising. When then-CEO Jack Dorsey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video\/politics\/twitter-announces-ban-on-political-ads\/2019\/10\/31\/aeb791ec-45f4-43ec-a5b7-cca4cf408668_video.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> the political ads bans in 2019, he said it was because he strongly believed that political messaging \u201cshould be earned, not bought.\u201d That language was then posted on the company\u2019s website, and was still there as of Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The sudden reversal was characteristic of the slapdash and chaotic manner in which Twitter is being run under its new owner, billionaire Elon Musk. The company announced the change and promised to \u201cshare more details\u201d as the work got underway. There was no explanation of why Twitter made the changes or how extensive the changes would be.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">While Twitter was always a marginal player in political advertising compared with Google or Facebook, Tuesday\u2019s move will enable political groups and figures to promote themselves in upcoming electoral contests. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Politicians and advocacy groups have previously complained that limiting all that type of advertising because some contains misinformation is unfair. Facebook went in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2020\/01\/09\/facebook-wont-limit-political-ad-targeting-or-stop-pols-lying\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposite direction<\/a> ahead of the 2020 election, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg arguing that it was not the company\u2019s responsibility to fact-check political ads, and that such ads would be allowed to run on the service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Political ads were also relatively inconsequential for Twitter\u2019s overall business.
