But I\u2019m going to make an exception.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In 2023, let\u2019s resolve not to jump to conclusions about how technology might or might not change your life. No one really knows.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Every year, there are tech gewgaws and breakthrough inventions that get your attention. For example, on your 2022 technology \u201cwow\u201d list, you could put the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/12\/28\/ai-chatgpt-dalle-year-in-review\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> advances in artificial intelligence<\/a> systems that invent text or images at your command. There was also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/interactive\/2022\/nuclear-fusion-power-source-challenges\/?itid=ap_pranshuverma&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">holy grail moment for nuclear fusion<\/a> that showed it might someday be possible to create clean, cheap and nearly limitless energy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">But it\u2019s a big question mark where all this might lead. Maybe the AI language generator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/12\/06\/what-is-chatgpt-ai\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ChatGPT<\/a> will free you from written drudge work. Or maybe it will overwhelm schools <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2022\/12\/28\/chatbot-cheating-ai-chatbotgpt-teachers\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with rampant cheating<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/06\/opinion\/chatgpt-ai-skilled-jobs-automation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wipe out jobs<\/a>. Maybe ChatGPT will do something else great or horrible. Or maybe ChatGPT will die.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">I don\u2019t know. You don\u2019t know. And it\u2019s fine to avoid predicting the unpredictable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Take the hint from the zillions of other times that technologies didn\u2019t (or, at least, didn\u2019t yet) become the world-transforming magic that optimists expected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">A decade ago, many executives working on driverless cars, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2013-02-06\/self-driving-cars-more-jetsons-than-reality-for-google-designers?sref=Qk91czAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expected<\/a> they would be commonplace on the roads <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@johnzimmer\/the-third-transportation-revolution-27860f05fa91#.6msd2oja6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by now<\/a>. They\u2019re still many years away from being mainstream. In 2022, cryptocurrencies showed again that they\u2019re not particularly useful other than as things people hope will go up in price. (And last year, crypto prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/12\/18\/crypto-winter-ftx-collapse-bitcoin-prices\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went down<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">And, unlike (or perhaps like) we expected, so far, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/10\/11\/meta-quest-pro-metaverse\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not many people<\/a> are hanging out in the metaverse, or having their cat\u2019s food <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/16\/technology\/delivery-drones.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">delivered by drones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">You probably also don\u2019t own a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2018\/06\/29\/whoa-meet-future-phones-that-fold-up-have-cameras-charge-over-thin-air\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">folding smartphone<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2014\/digital\/columns\/3d-tv-not-dead-yet-and-getting-better-1201055163\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D television<\/a>, despite predictions that those gadgets would become part of your life. And hey, a year ago, I bet you didn\u2019t think Elon Musk would own Twitter right now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">I&#8217;m not trying to shame anyone for being bad at fortune telling. Predictions are often wrong and new technology tends to take many years to catch on. But even experts have proved so off base with tech forecasts that we really shouldn&#8217;t take them too seriously.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">It&#8217;s a new year and a new you. So let&#8217;s resolve to have an open mind in 2023 about technology. Don&#8217;t be too sure about the promise or the pitfalls or how long it might take for the future to arrive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">You\u2019re going to have lots of opportunities to practice your new resolve. This year, for example, there will likely be a bunch of hype about a computer for your face reportedly set to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2022-12-11\/when-will-the-apple-car-launch-when-is-the-apple-ar-vr-headset-going-on-sale-lbjh9qs3?sref=Qk91czAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced by Apple<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Lots of companies have been developing goggle-type things that push you into virtual reality like the Meta Quest, or into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2020\/04\/23\/travis-scott-fortnite-concert-review\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immersive digital mingling <\/a>like in the \u201cFortnite\u201d video game. (I hate calling any of this stuff the metaverse, but you can use that term if you want.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Will Apple&#8217;s face computer be the moment when virtual reality and similar technologies start to become something for everyone? Shrug.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Apple\u2019s glasses will probably be expensive and imperfect for a while. And that\u2019s fine, as long as you put it in perspective. No single moment can reliably tell you whether we\u2019ll be wearing computers on our faces in the future or not, and how that might reshape your life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">This year, there are also likely to be several pivotal court cases in the United States that could alter social media as we know it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Right now, websites have fairly broad protections from being sued when people post terrible things. Those legal provisions, for example, shield Yelp from being legally responsible if you give a restaurant a savage review, and they insulate Snapchat if an illegal drug sale through the app <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2022\/11\/30\/fentanyl-fake-pills-social-media\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kills a child<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">But coming Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/10\/03\/scotus-section-230-supreme-court\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cases<\/a> this year could start to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/10\/31\/musk-has-decision-make-section-230-does-he-support-it-or-not\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">erode those special internet legal protections<\/a> that have been both powerfully dangerous and useful to you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">I don\u2019t know how any of these court cases will turn out, or how potential rulings might affect your experience online \u2014 but they are reminders that what you might feel is normal and immutable about your digital life can change, for good or for ill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">One lesson from the unpredictability of the future is to pay closer attention to what is working, or not working, with your technology right now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In the new year, you will have more ways than ever to stay connected to your loved ones and others like your doctor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">And, you\u2019ll be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/25\/black-friday-sustainable-shopping\/?itid=ap_shiraovide&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_30&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shop online without ruining the planet<\/a>, and make the most of sometimes-controversial apps that you and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/12\/20\/youtube-kids-tips-parents\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_30&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">your kids<\/a> use every day like YouTube.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">And though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/10\/25\/broadband-subsidies-coronavirus-aid\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government<\/a> and corporate failures still keep internet access inaccessible for many Americans, and despite going into the year with relatively few protections from companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2019\/12\/31\/how-we-survive-surveillance-apocalypse\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spying on everything you do<\/a>; in 2023, you can at least make sure that the tech of today serves you \u2026 and still keep one eye focused on the promising appeal of flying cars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">I\u2019d like to remind you repeatedly that Americans pay more for worse internet service than our counterparts in nearly all rich countries. It\u2019s bad.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">But here\u2019s a money-saving idea for you. Contact your internet service provider and demand a better deal \u2014 or else. I\u2019m writing this to force myself to take my advice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">These tips on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2021\/07\/13\/reduce-internet-cable-bill\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">negotiating a lower internet bill<\/a> might not work for you. But my colleague Geoffrey A. Fowler recently reported on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/17\/isp-prices-fees\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">country\u2019s naughtiest internet providers<\/a> and he found:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote border-box black font--article-body pl-sm pl-md-ns bc-black b bl cb mb-md mt-sm-ns mb-lg-mod-ns\">\n<p>\u201cCalling up and threatening to quit your internet service works. It\u2019s  super annoying, I know, but Verizon (for example) applied discounts to  58 percent of the bills people submitted, with an astounding monthly median discount of $40.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite class=\"db font-xxxs font-xxs-ns font-light font--subhead mt-xs font-normal gray-dark\">\u2014 Geoffrey Fowler<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">(Another tip: You probably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/graphics\/faster-internet-not-worth-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">don\u2019t need<\/a> the highest-speed upgrades that your internet company will push on you.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">DoNotPay, which automates tasks like fighting parking tickets, is working on an AI chatbot that can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/12\/13\/23505873\/donotpay-negotiate-bills-ai-chatbot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">negotiate with the internet company for you<\/a>. I haven\u2019t tried this use of ChatGPT, so I can\u2019t vouch for it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>Brag about YOUR one tiny win!<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdPvgG8CZNsbX95t6QrBLbYK444i7MpFnQcK3Iy53Nl_I0SGg\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tell us about<\/a> an app, gadget, or tech trick that made your day a little better.
