Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. today <\/span>previewed<\/span><\/a> four new displays that it plans to debut at this week\u2019s CES 2023 consumer electronics event in Las Vegas.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the new displays features a stand that allows it to tilt 90 degrees. Another targets creative professionals, while the two remaining monitors are optimized for video games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tilting display<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Smart Monitor M8 is a 27-inch computer monitor with 4K resolution, the industry term for a resolution of 3,840 pixels by 2,160 pixels. A height-adjustable stand allows users to tilt the monitor 90 degrees into a vertical configuration. According to Samsung, the vertical mode can ease tasks such as scrolling through documents.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Smart Monitor M8 includes an extensive set of software features. Users have access to Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and other streaming services, as well Samsung\u2019s Gaming Hub video game platform. A feature called Samsung Knox Vault isolates user files from the display\u2019s operating system to reduce the risk posed by cyberattacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Samsung, the Smart Monitor M8 doubles as a tool for managing smart home appliances. The display can be used to do wireless configuration of hundreds of connected devices ranging from smart lights to doorbells and thermostats. Samsung plans to roll out support for additional devices in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

ViewFinity S9<\/span><\/h3>\n

The second addition to Samsung\u2019s display lineup is the ViewFinity S9, a specialized screen geared toward creative professionals. It\u2019s a 27-inch monitor that features a resolution of 5,120 pixels by 2,880 pixels, as well as optimizations designed to reduce light reflection and glare.<\/span><\/p>\n

Samsung claims that the ViewFinity S9 provides near full support for DCI-P3, a technical standard used in the film industry to provide sharp visuals. For advanced users, the display offers a tool known as the Color Calibration Engine. The tool makes it possible to adjust several key display settings through a mobile app.<\/span><\/p>\n

New video game displays<\/span><\/h3>\n

The two other new displays that Samsung introduced today are optimized for video games. They\u2019re known as the Odyssey Neo G9 and the Odyssey OLED G9.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Neo G9 is a curved 57-inch display with a resolution of 7,680 pixels by 2,160 pixels. It\u2019s based on a technology that Samsung dubs quantum mini LED. The technology combines two display components, quantum dots and mini LED backlights, that manufacturers typically don\u2019t use together.<\/span><\/p>\n

Quantum dots are semiconducting nanocrystals that are included in many new displays. The nanocrystals make it possible to control brightness levels more granularly than is otherwise possible, which facilitates sharper visuals. The technology also provide certain other benefits, including improved energy efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n

Samsung says the Neo G9 combines quantum dots with mini LED backlights. Backlights are the components that generate light for a display\u2019s pixels. The mini LED version of the technology, which is one of several implementations available on the market, makes it possible to optimize pixel brightness with a high degree of accuracy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are introducing the future of gaming monitors with our Odyssey Neo G9, making each game more lifelike with innovative features and picture quality on a new scale,\u201d said Hoon Chung, the executive vice president of Samsung\u2019s display business.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 49-inch Odyssey OLED G9 provides a resolution of 3,840 pixels by 2,160 pixels with a 240-frame-per-second refresh rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The OLED G9 incorporates quantum dots much like the Neo G9, but doesn\u2019t feature mini LED backlights. It uses a technology known as OLED that allows a display\u2019s pixels to generate their own light instead of relying on an external source of illumination. According to Samsung, the OLED G9 provides built-in support for popular video game streaming services such as Nvidia Corp.\u2019s GeForce Now platform.<\/span><\/p>\n
