But, there is a social &#8220;element&#8221; built into many of Apple&#8217;s popular apps. &#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>After a few <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/16\/05\/06\/ping-20-apple-music-revamp-rumored-to-downplay-connect-social-network-feature\">failed attempts<\/a> to be truly &#8220;social,&#8221; the company&#8217;s approach is now focused on smaller &#8220;communities&#8221; of friends, family, or other groups.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>For example, you can compete against friends playing the same games, whether in <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/apple-arcade\" title=\"Apple Arcade\" data-kpt=\"1\">Apple Arcade<\/a> or through many third-party apps, as long as they support Game Center. More recently, Apple introduced a new way to share photos among your friends or family with <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/icloud\/vs\/icloud-shared-photo-library-vs-shared-albums-in-photos\">iCloud Photo Library<\/a>, and has made it easy to pin group chats and do more together in Messages and <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/facetime\" title=\"FaceTime\" data-kpt=\"1\">FaceTime<\/a>.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>You&#8217;ll notice that the key dependency behind Apple&#8217;s &#8220;social&#8221; opportunities mostly revolves around others in your circle who are also using Apple products and services. Although of course interacting with all the big social networks and rival services (like those from Google and Microsoft) are supported, this is largely the responsibility of those other companies \u2014  made painless for users by Apple&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/app-store\">App Store<\/a> marketplace.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>For several years now, the &#8220;share sheet&#8221; and its corresponding icon in most apps \u2014  including many third-party ones \u2014  has been the chief way to send items from your own libraries, or from the web, to individuals or groups.  Apple, though, takes a strong interest in helping users to share content on a smaller scale \u2014  to their loved ones and real-life contacts, in particular.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"being-social-in-game-center-music-and-photos\" id=\"being-social-in-game-center-music-and-photos\">Being &#8220;social&#8221; in Game Center, Music, and Photos<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/20\/06\/24\/apple-revamps-game-center-controller-support-in-ios-14-tvos-14-macos-big-sur\">Game Center<\/a>, which is supported in many <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/ios\" title=\"iOS\" data-kpt=\"1\">iOS<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/ipados\" title=\"iPadOS\" data-kpt=\"1\">iPadOS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/mac\" title=\"Mac\" data-kpt=\"1\">Mac<\/a> games, allows players to play along with or against friends, or find other players to set up competitions. This is intended to help you discover new artists and music, and recommendations from friends you know and trust.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Another important element of <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/apple-music\" title=\"Apple Music\" data-kpt=\"1\">Apple Music<\/a> is the ability to search playlists posted by other users, and make your own playlists available for others to find. These playlists are shareable on other websites and social media sites as well, widening the circle of people you can share your musical interests or discoveries with.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>There are even third-party tools designed to <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/19\/08\/18\/how-to-transfer-playlists-from-spotify-to-apple-music\">transfer playlists<\/a> in Spotify to <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/apple-music\" title=\"Apple Music\" data-kpt=\"1\">Apple Music<\/a> or vice-versa. Once again, Apple&#8217;s built-in features make it easy to share photos directly to your more personal circle of friends and family, but also to the wider world if desired.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>By sharing via Messages, Email, or AirDrop, there are a variety of ways to send or share pictures to people directly. Photo&#8217;s Shared Albums features allows users to create albums and invite friends and family who are also using Apple devices to contribute pictures, Live Photos, and videos.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"being-social-with-messages-and-group-facetime\" id=\"being-social-with-messages-and-group-facetime\">Being &#8220;social&#8221; with Messages, and Group FaceTime<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>As we&#8217;ve seen, Apple&#8217;s own implementation of social features now is largely based around &#8220;small world&#8221; ideas \u2014  real-world friends, family, and your social-media friend circle \u2014  and less around &#8220;whole world&#8221; public sharing such as websites or public pages on social media. Apple has toyed with &#8220;whole world&#8221; sharing before, with <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/08\/30\/apples-features-graveyard-once-heavily-marketed-now-gone\">iWeb<\/a> and Ping (later Connect) efforts that didn&#8217;t fully take off, going all the way back to the pioneering concept behind <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EWorld\">eWorld<\/a>.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>This strategy has led to greater success, with Messages and Group FaceTime, <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/20\/03\/23\/how-to-use-group-facetime\">in particular<\/a>, being extremely popular, with AirDrop having also found a sizable audience \u2014  and some notoriety \u2014  with the public. The ability to create group chats and pin them has proven to be a big hit, even finding popularity in business environments.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Apple has also augmented Messages and <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/facetime\" title=\"FaceTime\" data-kpt=\"1\">FaceTime<\/a> with an additional social feature: <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/21\/06\/07\/apple-introduces-shareplay-with-access-to-disney-hulu-and-other-streamers\">SharePlay<\/a>, which allows a group to listen or watch together to movies, audio, and other media. A number of third parties have opted into the technology, and in general, the public has embraced Apple&#8217;s version of &#8220;listening\/viewing parties&#8221;, especially for people who can&#8217;t be together in person.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>FaceTime has long been seen as the highest-quality of the various video-calling services, but it was limited to just Apple users (unlike Messages) until the company created a way for others to join <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/21\/06\/07\/facetime-will-now-support-android-and-other-devices-from-a-browser\">via web links<\/a>. &#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Additional features in FaceTime like <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/ipad\/tips\/these-devices-and-apps-offer-and-support-center-stage\">Center Stage<\/a> (available on devices with ultrawide cameras) can &#8220;move&#8221; the focus or create a brilliant &#8220;top-down&#8221; effect for demonstrations, leveraging the power of Apple&#8217;s M-class chips and the outstanding cameras in <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/iphone\" title=\"iPhone\" data-kpt=\"1\">iPhones<\/a>. &#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>The feature set and privacy of Group FaceTime audio or video calling make it nearly effortless for small groups to enjoy conversations or meetings, for free, worldwide \u2014  and have turned it into an invaluable resource for travelers.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/photos5.appleinsider.com\/gallery\/52199-103875-30990-51265-ios12-groupfacetime-ipad-iphone-l-xl.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/photos5.appleinsider.com\/gallery\/52199-103875-30990-51265-ios12-groupfacetime-ipad-iphone-l-xl.jpg\" alt=\"Group FaceTime uses size and emphasis to let you know who's talking in a group.\" height=\"373\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive article-image\"\/><\/a><figcaption>\n<p><span class=\"carousel-caption\">Group FaceTime uses size and emphasis to let you know who&#8217;s talking in a group.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"airdrop---the-epitome-of-apples-small-world-social-strategy\" id=\"airdrop---the-epitome-of-apples-small-world-social-strategy\">AirDrop \u2014  the epitome of Apple&#8217;s &#8220;small world&#8221; social strategy<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>By contrast, Apple&#8217;s popular AirDrop technology has been used for <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/14\/09\/15\/apple-watch-airdrop-ibeacon-continuity-coax-advanced-features-from-bluetooth-wifi\">over 10 years<\/a> to quickly send files, photos, or other media from an <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/iphone\" title=\"iPhone\" data-kpt=\"1\">iPhone<\/a> exclusively to nearby Apple devices. This can either be targeted directly to a nearby device or sent out to everyone in a small radius (typically 30 feet or so) with an Apple device nearby that has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>One of the first mass uses of AirDrop was to send and receive contact information at technology gatherings like CES, but friend and family groups have also adopted it. Apple recommends a default setting of &#8220;Contacts Only,&#8221; but there are times when &#8220;Everyone&#8221; will help you send or receive easily in a group.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Apple has recently changed AirDrop&#8217;s &#8220;Everyone&#8221; status to only be active for 10 minutes, first in China and <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/11\/10\/apple-plans-to-expand-airdrop-time-limit-to-customers-worldwide\">then worldwide<\/a>. It is unclear if Apple initially did this in response to the Chinese government&#8217;s displeasure at protesters <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/12\/10\/canada-condemns-apples-airdrop-changes-affecting-protestors-in-china\">using the feature<\/a> to share information, but it can also be a help in preventing unwanted visuals appearing as part of the &#8220;accept or reject&#8221; process.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>At present, more traditional methods like email or text messaging must be used if a recipient is using a non-Apple platform.
