That purpose was described in the name itself all this time.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a certain age, there\u2019s a good chance you have some nostalgic memories about screen savers. They were a big deal in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/795478\/windows-31-30-years-later\/\">early versions of Windows<\/a> and macOS. When there wasn\u2019t as much to do on a computer, screen savers were fun to customize and watch.<\/p>\n<p>However, they weren\u2019t just there for your enjoyment. The \u201cdisplay\u201d is a glass tube with an electromagnetic deflection system and a phosphorescent screen that glows when hit by an electron beam.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the nature of how CRTs work, when images are displayed on the screen for a long time, they become \u201cburnt in.\u201d Essentially, parts of the\u00a0phosphorescent screen glow for so long that they become unevenly worn down. The result is a faint ghost image that can be seen when the screen is off.<\/p>\n<p>Screen savers prevented this by automatically activating when the computer wasn\u2019t in use. The animations are constantly moving and changing, meaning a static image can\u2019t stay on screen for too long. You can use a screen saver in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/818387\/how-to-change-screen-saver-windows\/\">Windows 10<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/764336\/how-to-use-a-screen-saver-in-windows-11\/\">Windows 11<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/820568\/how-to-change-the-screen-saver-on-mac\/\">macOS<\/a>. Is it actually neccessary without a CRT monitor?<\/p>\n<p>In short: No,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/128644\/htg-explains-why-screen-savers-are-no-longer-necessary\/\">screensavers are no longer necessary<\/a>, but there may be some exceptions. Most modern computer monitors are LCD (liquid-crystal display). LCD monitors don\u2019t have any\u00a0phosphors that can get unevenly worn down and burn in.<\/p>\n<p>The other thing to think about is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/814538\/does-hibernating-my-pc-save-more-energy-than-sleep\/\">power-saving modes<\/a> that didn\u2019t used to exist. In the past, it would take a while for a computer to boot up, so you might leave it on more. Nowadays, with faster bootup times and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/128507\/htg-explains-should-you-shut-down-sleep-or-hibernate-your-laptop\/\">\u201cSleep\u201d and \u201cHibernate\u201d options<\/a>, it\u2019s not a big deal to simply \u201cturn off\u201d your computer. OLED monitors are slowly becoming more popular, and they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/687180\/oled-screen-burn-in-how-worried-should-you-be\/\">more susceptible to burn-in than LCD monitors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOLED\u201d stands for \u201cOrganic Light Emitting Diode.\u201d Essentially, the screen is made up of tiny diodes that individually light up and display colors to create the image on the screen. Since each diode emits its own light, they can degrade unevenly over time. This results in burn-in.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you have an OLED monitor and you tend to leave the screen on for long periods of time, you might want to use a screen saver.
