Thanks to increasingly complex cloud environments, the issue of cost optimization has become vital.<\/p>\n

By tapping into the financial operations (FinOps) discipline as its superpower from both a technology and licensing perspective, SoftwareONE AG heightens cloud value through spend optimization, according to Bernd Schlotter<\/a> (pictured, right), president and member of the executive board at SoftwareONE.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe FinOps Foundation estimates\u00a0that about a third of cloud spend is waste, and that\u2019s where FinOps comes in,\u201d Schlotter said.\u00a0\u201cWe can help customers be more efficient in the cloud\u00a0and lower their cloud spend while doing the same or more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schlotter and Neil Lomax<\/a> (pictured, left), member of the executive board and president at SoftwareONE, spoke with theCUBE hosts\u00a0Savannah Peterson<\/a> and John Furrier<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0AWS re:Invent<\/a>, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio. They discussed the need for FinOps in the realization of cloud and cost optimization objectives.\u00a0(* Disclosure below.)<\/em><\/p>\n

A confident cloud is crucial<\/h3>\n

The FinOps journey should not be treated as an afterthought because it ought to be embedded from the onset, according to Lomax, who said this sets the pace for a confident cloud.<\/p>\n

\u201cA confident cloud means you\u2019ll do more with it,\u201d he noted. \u201cIf you lose confidence in that bill\u00a0in how much it\u2019s costing you, you\u2019re going to retract.\u00a0And so it\u2019s really\u00a0about making sure all customers know exactly\u00a0what\u2019s in there, how it\u2019s optimized, restocking,\u00a0reformatting applications,\u00a0getting more out of the microservices\u00a0and getting more value out the cloud, and that will help them tighten that belt.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a founding member of the FinOps Foundation, SoftwareONE helps enterprises apply FinOps when migrating to the cloud through different perspectives, from software licensing to infrastructure, according to Schlotter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you start with the business case, and you\u2019re not just looking at infrastructure costs\u00a0like most people do. You ought to look at software licensing costs,\u201d Schlotter said. \u201cFor example, if you run SQL on-premise, you have an enterprise agreement.\u00a0But if you move it to the cloud, you may actually take a different, more favorable licensing agreement and save a lot of money.\u00a0And these things are hidden.\u00a0They\u2019re not to be seen, but they need to be part of the business case.\u201d<\/p>\n
