Engineering plans like this might take years and only everyone voting for Brexit should really have seen how delicate the economy is.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Yet Apple did make a nod to the world&#8217;s situation by keeping the ninth generation iPad on sale. It&#8217;s led to the unusual situation where, comparing performance, features, and especially price, the gem in the iPad lineup is last year&#8217;s model.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12 embed\">\n<div class=\"align-center\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Top NEW Features of Apple TV 4K (2022)!!!\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XJCxeln41NA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Apple was luckier in its timing with the Apple TV 4K. While it still doesn&#8217;t run on the latest processors, and while it still works exactly as it has for years, this time Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/18\/new-apple-tv-4k-with-a15-more-storage-debuts\">cut the cost<\/a>.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>True, it did so by removing the Ethernet port, but you didn&#8217;t even realize there used to be one.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"apples-more-damaging-launch\" id=\"apples-more-damaging-launch\">Apple&#8217;s more damaging launch<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Maybe the new iPad is perfect for you, in which case you buy it. And if it isn&#8217;t, then you don&#8217;t. It&#8217;s not like we have to buy everything Apple launches.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Except in October 2022, you had no choice but to see what became one of the month&#8217;s biggest controversies. At one point in October 2022, you could regularly see ads for gambling apps \u2014  positioned in the listing for apps that are <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/26\/gambling-app-store-ads-are-showing-up-next-to-addiction-recovery-apps\">intended to help<\/a> gamblers quit.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"developing-new-business-models\" id=\"developing-new-business-models\">Developing new business models<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Apple switched its ad expansion off after complaints, but you know it&#8217;s coming back and you know it is only going to grow. Hopefully it&#8217;s at least going to be done with more care in future.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Though it wasn&#8217;t just Apple trying to expand and get some new revenue. Throughout the month, there was a back and forth as YouTube experimented with trying to get some cash by charging people to watch videos <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/04\/get-ready-to-pay-to-see-4k-video-on-youtube\">in 4K<\/a>.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>By the end of the month, though, the experiment was <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/18\/youtube-drops-experiment-reserving-4k-for-paying-viewers\">officially over<\/a> and 4K videos remain as free to watch as they always were. &#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Don&#8217;t bet on it staying that way, though, as the experiment cannot have been a technical one, it has to have been a marketing trial. If it can be turned back on with the tap of a button, YouTube finances only have to get so poor before that button will be pressed.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"designers-coming-and-going\" id=\"designers-coming-and-going\">Designers coming and going<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>YouTube has the advantage that it makes money off millions of videos uploaded without the creators&#8217; consent, but it also has a disadvantage. That&#8217;s always been the Apple way, but then Apple&#8217;s design team took a hit this month as it <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/21\/apples-replacement-for-jony-ive-is-leaving-the-company\">lost Evans Hankey<\/a>.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>She wasn&#8217;t as much a household name as Jony Ive, but she did replace him and she has been key to Apple. Not any more, though, and if Apple has a succession plan, it wasn&#8217;t revealed in October 2022.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"eu-passes-new-law\" id=\"eu-passes-new-law\">EU passes new law<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Whoever takes over from Hankey as chief hardware designer, they&#8217;re going to have to deal with a significant change to the <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/iphone\">iPhone<\/a>. In October 2022, the European Union finally <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/04\/iphone-must-use-usb-c-by-2024-says-eu-law\">passed a law<\/a> that will require all smartphones to use a common charger.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Specifically, it&#8217;s USB-C, and while there&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/06\/tony-fadell-wants-to-see-iphone-move-to-usb-c\">lot to praise<\/a> about the idea of a common charger, the law launching it <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/07\/usb-c-on-iphone-is-good---but-not-an-excuse-for-a-bad-law\">is flawed<\/a>. Still, Apple&#8217;s going to have to swap out Lightning for at least Europe, and more likely the world.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>It can rest easy about the UK, though, as the country has said it <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/06\/08\/uk-wont-copy-eu-usb-c-common-charger-mandate\">won&#8217;t follow<\/a> the EU in implementing this requirement. Just imagine the relief at <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/apple-park\">Apple Park<\/a>.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"but-back-to-design-chiefs\" id=\"but-back-to-design-chiefs\">But back to design chiefs<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>By chance, the exit of one design chief was announced around the same time as the very brief return of another one. Jony Ive was again involved with Apple, or at least <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/apple-tv-plus\">Apple TV+<\/a>.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/photos5.appleinsider.com\/gallery\/52159-103799-888-boymolefoxhorse-xl.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/photos5.appleinsider.com\/gallery\/52159-103799-888-boymolefoxhorse-xl.jpg\" alt=\"\" the=\"\" boy=\"\" mole=\"\" fox=\"\" and=\"\" horse=\"\" on=\"\" bbc1=\"\" apple=\"\" tv=\"\" height=\"731\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive article-image\"\/><\/a><figcaption>\n<p><span class=\"carousel-caption\">&#8220;The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse&#8221; on BBC1 and Apple TV+<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>It&#8217;s unlikely that it entailed him popping back in to Apple Park, though. <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/10\/jony-ive-and-apple-reunite-for-apple-tv-animated-short\">Ive is<\/a> one of the executive producers on &#8220;The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse.&#8221; The animation is due to be screened first on BBC1 in the UK on Christmas Day, then streamed worldwide on Apple TV+.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"staff-moves\" id=\"staff-moves\">Staff moves<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>As Ive was being CCd on emails with Apple TV+, and as Hankey was looking for the door, staff at other firms were having a particularly bad time. Everyone at Twitter spent October wondering whether they would still have a job in November, for instance.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>That was because the unimaginable went through hoops in the month, only to land at the end on yes, Elon Musk has bought Twitter. On his <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/28\/elon-musk-reigns-as-twitter-ceo-fires-top-execs-first-day\">first day<\/a>, he fired most of the company&#8217;s executives, then went to town on the staff.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>It&#8217;s obviously been most scary for Twitter employees, a great many of whom are now going to be spending a lot of time working on lawsuits. &#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>A problem is that if you worked for Twitter, you obviously had a Twitter account and there wasn&#8217;t a lot of reason to have anything else. So just as staff there typically discovered they&#8217;d been laid off by losing online access, it&#8217;s also been hard for friends to stay in contact with them.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Consequently, not to single one employee out, but Nigel, let us know if you&#8217;re still there and okay, would you?&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"staff-action\" id=\"staff-action\">Staff action<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>There was a worse place to work at than Twitter in October 2022. Obviously the conditions weren&#8217;t as bad as they allegedly were in Zhengzhou with COVID lockdowns and a lack of food, but there they were worse than Apple would like you to think.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>October saw more anti-union efforts from Apple, which just chiefly underscored why retail staff now need unions. Apple repeatedly says that it is proud of its workers, and does say that it pays more than other firms.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Yet in this month Australia saw what&#8217;s claimed to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/18\/australia-apple-store-workers-go-on-strike\">first national strike<\/a> by retail staff in the country&#8217;s history \u2014  and it was staff at Apple Stores.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"apple-gets-attention\" id=\"apple-gets-attention\">Apple gets attention<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>If this history strike had been by workers at any other Australian store, no one reading <em>AppleInsider<\/em> would have even heard about it. This was a genuine case of Apple getting attention it deserves \u2014  but as ever, there were examples of it being made a scapegoat.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Such as Mark Zuckerberg <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/11\/zuckerberg-thinks-apple-is-making-aggressive-moves-now-to-control-the-metaverse\">blaming Apple<\/a> for his making an expensive VR headset. Or something like that.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>In Zuckerberg&#8217;s mind, Apple is aggressively making moves to control the metaverse. Such as entirely failing to release a headset or even admit that one is coming.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"if-apple-is-involved-its-news\" id=\"if-apple-is-involved-its-news\">If Apple is involved, it&#8217;s news<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Similarly, the Level Lock+ came out in October and <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/15\/level-lock-with-home-key-hits-some-apple-store-shelves\">some Apple Stores<\/a> stocked it. That&#8217;s enough to make it news, and preferably bad news, as long as you can make Apple look bad.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/photos5.appleinsider.com\/gallery\/52159-103796-888-Level-Lock+-xl.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/photos5.appleinsider.com\/gallery\/52159-103796-888-Level-Lock+-xl.jpg\" alt=\"Level Lock+\" height=\"720\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive article-image\"\/><\/a><figcaption>\n<p><span class=\"carousel-caption\">Level Lock+<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>In this case, the Apple-is-bad news cycle centered on how a <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/11\/04\/level-responds-to-lock-picking-claim-says-level-lock-exceeds-standards\">YouTuber revealed<\/a> that it&#8217;s possible to break a Level Lock+ by using exactly the same techniques that will break the regular lock on your front door right now.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>If anything, the Level Lock+ is ultimately more secure than regular locks because, yes, it can be broken \u2014  but it will send you a notification if someone does it.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>That is a very good feature and you&#8217;d hardly know about it from the press coverage.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 data-anchor=\"up-in-the-air\" id=\"up-in-the-air\">Up in the air<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>But then there was also Lufthansa, which allegedly made up stuff about Apple. The airline banned <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/airtags\">AirTags<\/a> from its flights because they are illegal under International Civilian Aviation Organization guidelines \u2014  and <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/09\/lufthansa-airtags-ban-based-on-incredibly-bad-regulation-interpretation\">they&#8217;re not<\/a>. Not in the slightest, and before the month was out, Lufthansa had <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/22\/10\/12\/lufthansa-flip-flops-airtags-now-allowed-on-flights\">backed down<\/a>.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Just to stress this, not one pixel of Lufthansa&#8217;s published argument against AirTags was true. And just to stress it still further, if Apple designed AirTags to have batteries that were illegal on flights, it wouldn&#8217;t just be Evans Hankey heading for the door.&#13;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<p>Far be it for <em>AppleInsider<\/em> to question why an airline would not want people to be able to track where their luggage goes.
