For over a century, the Times Square Ball<\/a> has lit up and slowly dropped each New Year\u2019s Eve in New York City, marking the end of the year with an impressive LED display. Now there\u2019s an official \u201cMetaverse\u201d experience.<\/p>\n

Jamestown LP, the real estate conglomerate that owns the One Times Square building and the ball on top, released a \u201cvirtual experience\u201d<\/a> of the ball drop at the end of 2020. It was primarily marketed as a safe way to enjoy the festivities \u2014 the in-person New Year\u2019s Eve party in 2020 was drastically scaled down<\/a> to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It offered a livestream of the event, as well as a virtual environment to explore before that with some mini-games and unlockable content.<\/p>\n

The game has stuck around since then, and\u00a0Jamestown LP is promoting it again ahead of New Year\u2019s Eve. This time, however, it\u2019s branded as \u201cthe Times Square Metaverse\u201d \u2014 keeping in tune with the current trend<\/a> of calling any virtual environment the \u201cmetaverse.\u201d<\/p>\n

VNYE, short for Virtual New Year\u2019s Eve, is available for Windows<\/a>, Android<\/a>, iPhone<\/a>, and iPad<\/a>. It\u2019s still just a series of mini-games integrated with a livestream of the event (when that starts).\u00a0There\u2019s no VR support, it\u2019s pretty laggy, even on my fourth-gen iPad Air. The game also requires an email address for some reason.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s not much of a reason to try out the game, but the VNYE website<\/a> will broadcast a livestream of the real-life event on New Year\u2019s Eve, if you can\u2019t catch it on TV.<\/p>\n
