Nexperia is a Netherlands-based company that was acquired in 2018 by China-based Wingtech Technology. It&#8217;s that Chinese connection and potential future use of the site that has His Majesty&#8217;s government up in arms.<\/p>\n<p>Nexperia&#8217;s acquisition of the Newport Wafer Fab in 2021 for \u00a363 million ($76 million) drew the attention of many within the British government \u2014 including then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson \u2014 who expressed national security concerns and called for a probe. The factory typically manufactures 32,000 silicon wafers of chips a month.<\/p>\n<p>The decision drew condemnation from Nexperia execs who expressed frustration that the deal was killed after passing &#8220;two previous security reviews,&#8221; and pledged to challenge the order and &#8220;do everything possible to keep the factory and protect its employees in South Wales.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y66dQM6WvxYdpUzeFX@QEAAAAAA&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y66dQM6WvxYdpUzeFX@QEAAAAAA&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>Akin Gump, a law firm well known for representing US politicians in high-profile cases \u2014 including former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, has been hired to represent Nexperia&#8217;s interests in a judicial review of the situation by the High Court of England and Wales, The Telegraph <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2022\/12\/29\/chinese-backed-company-instructs-us-law-firm-uk-blocked-microchip\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">reported<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n<p>National security concerns surrounding chip manufacturing have only grown more intense in recent months as the US and its allies have worked to stymie China&#8217;s domestic semiconductor industry.<\/p>\n<p>These efforts have included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/12\/16\/us_bans_companies_it_suspects\/\">freezing out<\/a> Chinese chipmakers, such as memory vendor YMTC; banning the export of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/09\/01\/us_stops_nvidia_and_amd\/\">AI hardware<\/a> made by the likes of Nvidia and AMD to the Middle Kingdom; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/09\/13\/biden_china_chip_sanctions\/\">barring<\/a> US vendors responsible for producing chipmaking equipment and software from doing business with Chinese firms.<\/p>\n<p>And these efforts aren&#8217;t limited to the US. TSMC and Samsung Electronics \u2014 which rely heavily on US-made manufacturing equipment, technology, and intellectual property \u2014 have been forced to terminate manufacturing deals with several Chinese chipmakers, including Alibaba and Biren Technology. Meanwhile, Netherlands-based ASML, which produces equipment used in semiconductor manufacturing, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/07\/05\/us_expands_efforts_to_hamstring\/\">prevented<\/a> from selling its most advanced lithography equipment to China.<\/p>\n<p>And as far as mergers and acquisitions are concerned, Nexperia&#8217;s Newport deal isn&#8217;t the first to be scuttled by concerns over Chinese government influence. iPhone maker Foxconn is facing fines from the Taiwanese government after it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/12\/20\/taiwan_foxconn_chips\/\">acquired<\/a> a minority stake in China-based Tsinghau Unigroup without regulatory approval.
