(D) has approved a comprehensive right-to-repair law for tech products \u2013 the first of its kind for a US state \u2013 though not before some changes were made to the fine print.<\/p>\n<p>The Empire State&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2021\/S4104\">Digital Fair Repair Act<\/a>, giving owners of some tech gadgets \u2013 and independent repair shops \u2013 the right to obtain and install replacement parts, was passed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/06\/03\/new_york_repair\/\">overwhelming majorities<\/a> by the state legislature in June and was sent for Governor Hochul&#8217;s signature.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the law requires manufacturers to reasonably provide documentation, diagrams, parts, and tools for consumer electronics sold in New York to device owners and repair shops so that they can diagnose and fix their broken stuff by themselves.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n        <noscript><br \/>\n            <a has been edited. These types of changes are called chapter amendments, which are supposed to streamline and smooth the legislative process in New York. In addition, manufacturers can bundle together components \u2013 so you may end up being offered a large bag of parts rather than individual pieces \u2013 and people won&#8217;t be allowed to bypass device security mechanisms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2018\/10\/26\/repair_shutterstock.jpg?x=174&amp;amp;y=115&amp;amp;crop=1\" alt=\"repair\" width=\"174\" height=\"115\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 title=\"Gatekeeper capitalism at its most odious\">Right to repair shouldn&#8217;t exist \u2013 not because it&#8217;s wrong but because it&#8217;s so obviously right<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/08\/02\/right_to_repair\/\"><span>COMMENT<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The governor&#8217;s changes definitely made the bill worse,&#8221; Kyle Wiens, CEO of repair org iFixit told <em>The Register<\/em> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The governor was lobbied heavily by TechNet, and capitulated to much of what they wanted. But we are so much better off than we were before: mandatory parts and repair information requirements, circuit schematics, and more. I expect other states to pick up and fill in the gaps in the legislation left by the governor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Others were less diplomatic.
