Finding rare events in software applications is one of the principal reasons artificial intelligence succeeds in increasingly complex environments, says a DevOps trouble automaton expert.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s telling you this cluster of events is both unusual and unlikely to be random,\u201d said Ajay Singh<\/a> (pictured left), founder and chief executive officer of Zebrium Inc., a machine learning analytics provider recently acquired by ScienceLogic Inc.<\/p>\n

Singh and Michael Nappi<\/a> (pictured right), chief product and engineering officer at ScienceLogic, spoke with theCUBE hosts\u00a0John Furrier<\/a> and Savannah Peterson<\/a> at AWS re:Invent<\/a>, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio. They discussed advances is the processes for finding root causes of software problems. (* Disclosure below.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Scaled misunderstandings<\/h3>\n

The problem with traditional fault-finding is that humans can\u2019t scale quickly like data can, according to Singh. That\u2019s because modern cloud applications, with the plethora of microservices, containers and so on are creating ever more complex environments. That\u2019s all exacerbated through the increasing speed by which changes get rolled out. \u201cSoftware breaks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople develop new features within hours, push them out to production. The human has just no ability or time to understand what\u2019s normal. You need a machine,\u201d Singh explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t manage what you don\u2019t know about,\u201d added Nappi. \u201cVisibility, discoverability, understanding what\u2019s going on in a lot of ways, that\u2019s the really hard problem to solve.\u201d That\u2019s where AI comes in, and Zebrium has its own specialized approach to things.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt its heart it\u2019s classifying the event catalog of any application stack,\u201d Singh explained. \u201cFiguring out what\u2019s rare, when things start to break, it\u2019s telling you this cluster of events is both unusual and unlikely to be random,\u201d indicating the root cause of the problem.<\/p>\n

The process of identifying issues with more accuracy has changed as services have become more prevalent in information technology. \u201cYou can\u2019t hire enough engineers to scale that kind of complexity. They use machine learning to tremendous effect to rapidly understand the root cause of an application failure,\u201d Nappi said of Zebrium\u2019s AI approach.<\/p>\n
