Southwest Airlines declined to address <em>The Register&#8217;s<\/em> request for additional information regarding the origins of the failure or the specific IT systems effected.<\/p>\n<p>Southwest will continue to operate at a reduced schedule to reposition crew and planes where they&#8217;re needed most. The airline claims it should be back on schedule &#8220;before next week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/flightaware.com\/live\/cancelled\/\">FlightAware<\/a>, of the 2,813 US flights canceled Wednesday, Southwest was responsible for 2,509.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Southwest attracts USDOT ire<\/h3>\n<p>The scale of the disruption had already attracted the ire of the US Department of Transportation. In a Tweet Tuesday, the USDOT <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/usdot\/status\/1607558478859759616\">called<\/a> Southwest&#8217;s rate of cancellations and delays &#8220;unacceptable,&#8221; and promised to investigate whether Southwest is complying with its customer service plan.<\/p>\n<p>And on Wednesday US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg characterized the situation as a &#8220;Meltdown,&#8221; and called on Southwest to make customers whole in an <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GMA\/status\/1608075800254767105\">interview<\/a> with ABC early Wednesday.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/networks&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Y6ytOOZp0DIfHGWv69C73QAAABQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/networks&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Y6ytOOZp0DIfHGWv69C73QAAABQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>&#8220;They need to make sure that these stranded passengers get to where they need to go and that they&#8217;re provided adequate compensation not just for the flight itself\u2026, but also things like hotels like ground transportation, like meals, because this is the airline&#8217;s responsibility,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The airline is encouraging customers impacted by cancellations or delays to rebook or request a refund at <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/southwest.com\/traveldisruption\">http:\/\/southwest.com\/traveldisruption<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Time for IT from this century?<\/h3>\n<p>Over the past year several airlines have announced sweeping upgrades to their IT infrastructure, in part to avoid pitfalls like the one Southwest is now digging its way out of.<\/p>\n<p>This summer Delta <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/07\/13\/delta_lands_in_amazon_web\/\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> it would modernize and migrate its workloads to Amazon Web Services, however it&#8217;s not clear how much of the company&#8217;s backbone infrastructure is bound for the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>This spring, American Airlines went even farther announcing a similar partnership with Microsoft to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/05\/19\/american_airlines_azure\/\" rel=\"noopener\">migrate<\/a> its data warehousing and legacy apps to a single operations hub on Azure. In addition to cutting operating costs, a key goal of the contract was to boost efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>According to American, the integration with Azure will speed up bag tracking, enable preemptive rerouting based on weather conditions, and simulate larger changes using digital twins. The collaboration also involved the development of a mobile application that allows airline staff to access applications and communicate from wherever they are.
