Ring Video Doorbells are a great choice if you want to keep an eye on the coming and goings around your home. To get the most out of your Ring\u2014and make it less annoying\u2014there are some features you should use.<\/p>\n

Enable Two-Factor Authentication<\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s start with security. Your doorbell is likely at the main entry point to your home, so make sure not just anyone can get into your account and peep at it. Two-factor authentication<\/a> (2FA) is an absolute must.<\/p>\n

To enable 2FA on your Ring account, open the mobile app and tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top left. Go to Account Settings > Two-Step Verification. You\u2019ll be able to choose \u201cText Message\u201d or \u201cAuthenticator App\u201d for receiving the codes.<\/p>\n

Jump Straight to the Live View<\/h2>\n

By default, when you tap the camera preview on the main Dashboard, you\u2019re taken to the recent events timeline. You can change it so tapping the camera preview goes straight to the live video feed.<\/p>\n

Tap the gear icon on the doorbell camera preview and go to Device Settings > Video Settings. Toggle on \u201cTap Camera Preview for Live View.\u201d<\/p>\n

Make Custom Motion Zones<\/h2>\n

There\u2019s a good chance your Ring Doorbell can see areas that mistakenly set off the motion alerts\u2014like a busy road or neighbor\u2019s house. You can create a custom zone<\/a> so only motion in that area sends alerts.<\/p>\n

Tap the gear icon on the doorbell camera preview and go to Motion Settings > Edit Zones. Use the handles to adjust the zone shape and size, and tap \u201cSave\u201d when you\u2019re done. You can create multiple zones.<\/p>\n

Block Out Parts of the Camera for Privacy<\/h2>\n

Video doorbells can record a lot of activity around your home, but some of that activity might include your neighbors. You can create \u201cPrivacy Zones\u201d to restrict video coverage of certain areas in view.<\/p>\n

Tap the gear icon on the doorbell camera preview and go to Device Settings > Privacy Settings > Privacy Zones. Tap \u201cAdd Privacy Zones\u201d and draw over the areas you\u2019d like to exclude from recordings.<\/p>\n

Customize the Shortcuts on the Dashboard<\/h2>\n

The main Dashboard screen in the Ring app has a row of shortcuts for quick access across the top. You can customize and rearrange these shortcuts to your liking.<\/p>\n

Tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top left of the app and select \u201cSettings.\u201d Tap \u201cShortcuts,\u201d then drag the handles to move the shortcuts. Drag shortcuts to the \u201cHidden Shortcuts\u201d section to hide them from the Dashboard.<\/p>\n

Put the App in Dark Mode<\/h2>\n

Here\u2019s an easy tip that will make the Ring app a little easier on your eyes.\u00a0Tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top left of the app and select \u201cDisplay.\u201d Switch the mode to \u201cAlways Dark\u201d and choose \u201cStandard\u201d for dark grey or \u201cExtra Dark\u201d for black.<\/p>\n

Give Other People Access to the Doorbell<\/h2>\n

If you live with other people, you may want them to be able to access the doorbell and get alerts too. You don\u2019t have to share a login with the same account. The \u201cShared Access\u201d features lets other Ring accounts access the doorbell and customize (some) settings to their own preferences.<\/p>\n

Tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top left of the app and select \u201cSettings.\u201d Now go to \u201cShared Access\u201d and tap the floating plus icon button to invite someone else.<\/p>\n

Get Smart Alerts for People & Packages<\/h2>\n

\"Smart<\/p>\n

Ring can attempt to curate the number of alerts you get with a feature called \u201cSmart Alerts.\u201d It allows you to decide which things you\u2019d like to be notified about\u2014such as detecting people or packages\u2014and if you want video to be recorded for them.<\/p>\n

Tap the gear icon on the doorbell camera preview and go to Motion Settings > Smart Alerts. There are three options: \u201cPerson,\u201d \u201cOther Motion,\u201d and \u201cPackage.\u201d You can decide if you want to record video, get alerts, or both for each one.<\/p>\n

Turn Off Motion Alerts on a Schedule<\/h2>\n

Another way to reduce the number of unwanted alerts is with a Motion Schedule. This allows you to disable motion alerts during certain times and days.<\/p>\n

Tap the gear icon on the doorbell camera preview and go to Motion Settings > Advanced Settings > Motion Schedules. Tap \u201cAdd Schedule\u201d and follow the instructions to create a schedule. You can create multiple schedules.<\/p>\n

Set Up Quick Replies For When You Can\u2019t Answer the Door<\/h2>\n

\"Choose<\/p>\n

It\u2019s nice to be able to talk to people at your door through the doorbell, but you may not always be able to.\u00a0\u201cQuick Replies<\/a>\u201d are pre-recorded messages that play through the speaker when you\u2019re not able to answer the door.<\/p>\n

When someone presses the doorbell button, your selected message plays\u2014after a set time\u2014and the person can leave a message for you. Keep in mind that this does make it pretty obvious that you\u2019re not at home.<\/p>\n
