It came after Facebook revealed it had<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-87-million-peoples-data-taken-in-cambridge-analytica-scandal-2018-4?r=US&amp;IR=T\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> exposed the data of 87 million users<\/a> to Cambridge Analytica. <\/p>\n<p data-pos=\"6\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/cambridge-analytica-a-guide-to-the-trump-linked-data-firm-that-harvested-50-million-facebook-profiles-2018-3?r=US&amp;IR=T#what-data-did-they-get-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cambridge Analytica gathered personal information <\/a>about millions of Facebook users through an external app in 2015. Users took a personality quiz that pulled data from them and their friend&#8217;s profiles.<\/p>\n<p data-p-pos=\"11_5\">Details included their locations and pages they liked, helping the firm to build a psychological profile of users. <\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump&#8217;s presidential campaign <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2016\/11\/trump-polling-data\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">worked with Cambridge Analytica staffers in 2016, per reports.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-pos=\"9\">Facebook was hit with a<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-ftc-record-penalty-mark-zuckerberg-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> $5 billion fine<\/a> in 2019 by the Federal Trade Commission over the scandal. The tech company had been accused of violating a 2012 agreement with the commission in which it promised not to give third parties access to user data without consent. <\/p>\n<p data-pos=\"10\">Facebook has tightened its policies since the case and stopped giving third parties access to data about users through friends, the court filing said.<\/p>\n<p>Meta agreed to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/metas-facebook-agrees-settle-data-privacy-lawsuit-2022-08-26\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">settle the lawsuit<\/a> in August and a month later Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was called to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/mark-zuckerberg-cambridge-analytica-meta-deposition-lawsuit-2022-7?r=US&amp;IR=T\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">six-hour deposition<\/a> about Cambridge Analytica. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We pursued a settlement as it&#8217;s in the best interest of our community and shareholders,&#8221; A spokesperson at Meta said to Insider. &#8220;Over the last three years we revamped our approach to privacy and implemented a comprehensive privacy program.
