to do this to you, dear reader, but here\u2019s another item for your pre-holiday to-do list: update firmware on any Cisco DNA Center appliances you\u2019ve acquired since September.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Register<\/i> offers that advice because Cisco has issued a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/support\/docs\/field-notices\/725\/fn72520.html\" rel=\"noopener\">field notice<\/a> titled \u201cSome Cisco DNA Center Appliances Shipped Between September 2022 and November 2022 Have Incorrect Firmware Installed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The ill-fitting firmware was installed in RAID cards and network interface cards and \u201cis not compatible with the Cisco Integrated Management Controller (CIMC) and BIOS firmware.\u201d<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n        <noscript><br \/>\n            <a Cisco\u2019s network controller and management package \u2013 \u201cdoes not notice these errors and continues to operate as if the RAID controller status is normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fix is installing the correct firmware.<\/p>\n<p>To figure out if your box needs the fix, you\u2019ll need a Cisco account to access a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/snvui.cisco.com\/snv\/FN72520\" rel=\"noopener\">serial number validation tool<\/a> that will reveal whether or not your machine has the infirm firmware.<\/p>\n<p>But Cisco advises care when using that tool, as while it can tell you if your box was shipped with the crocked code, it can\u2019t report on any firmware updates you may already have installed.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/networks&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y6Kk2fQR5moz66ykplZEDQAAAIg&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" previously <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/04\/24\/cisco_ucs_ssd_warning\/\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that some of its servers included SSDs that die after 40,000 hours of use due to another firmware issue.<\/p>\n<p>HPE and Dell both <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blocksandfiles.com\/2020\/03\/24\/hpe-enterprise-ssd-40k-hours-flaw\/\" rel=\"noopener\">blamed<\/a> disk-maker Western Digital for a similar issue.<\/p>\n<p>This time around, the fault is Cisco\u2019s alone: the company offered the following explanation for how it appliances to Cisco DNA Center Software Version 2.3.3.4 and CIMC Version 4.1(3d). This change was made to switch to the new Generally Available (GA) software version, as is done from time to time. Due to a manufacturing process error during the switch, only the Cisco DNA Center, CIMC, and BIOS software was upgraded.
