After pulling over to let another vehicle pass last week, their car had slipped on some gravel, sending them on a terrifying free fall. As they looked around the canyon they\u2019d landed in \u2014 both shaken up but not seriously injured \u2014 all they could think about was how to get help<b> <\/b>in a remote area with no cellphone service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">But when Zelada located Fields\u2019s shattered iPhone 14 in<b> <\/b>the dirt, they learned their rescue had<b> <\/b>already begun. A new Apple feature<b> <\/b>had detected the crash and alerted emergency services.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">About 40 minutes after believing their lives were over, Fields, 23, and Zelada, 24, were in<b> <\/b>a helicopter<b> <\/b>on the way to a Pasadena, Calif., hospital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cWe do have moments where we\u2019re like, \u2018Holy [crap], that was the size of a football field that we fell from,\u201d Fields told The Washington Post. \u201cBut I don\u2019t think it\u2019s fully set in for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Fields and Zelada have driven on the Los Angeles County highway often to view the surrounding Angeles National Forest. After meeting in a Pasadena City College math class four years ago, the two had bonded over their love of the outdoors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Fields, a freelance video editor, and Zelada, a Honda sales consultant, were off work Dec. 13 and decided to drive their favorite route after enjoying breakfast bowls. While Zelada navigated the two-lane highway on a sunny afternoon, a car honked in hopes of passing them. But when he pulled over into uneven gravel<b> <\/b>on the side of the road,<b> <\/b>the car lost traction. The new Hyundai turned 180 degrees before dropping off the mountainside into the forest\u2019s Monkey Canyon, the couple said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">During the 15-second fall through trees, Fields said she hyperventilated while Zelada gripped the steering wheel and repeated \u201cWe\u2019re okay.\u201d Both believed they would soon be dead.<b> <\/b>Zelada had heard stories about fatal falls from the road, but he never imagined<b> <\/b>it was something that would happen to him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cWe had a one-in-a-million chance to survive,\u201d Zelada said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The two were still breathing when the upside-down car\u2019s nose smacked the ground near a creek. A tree trunk blocked the door by the driver\u2019s seat, Zelada said, so they both escaped through the passenger\u2019s side. They had scrapes on their faces but, on first inspection, no broken bones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In search of help, Zelada suggested hiking the forest. Fields sought a means for communication \u2014 oblivious that her phone, which she had purchased about two weeks earlier, was functioning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">When Zelada found Fields\u2019s phone about 10 yards from the crash site, Fields said her screen read, \u201cIt looks like you\u2019ve been in a crash,\u201d with the option to swipe to conduct an emergency call. Emergency SOS that can connect via satellite comes standard with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, per <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT213426#:~:text=If%20your%20iPhone%20or%20Apple,cellular%20and%20Wi%2DFi%20coverage.\">Apple\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The technology enabled Fields to alert local emergency services. After <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MontroseSAR\/status\/1602828980121325568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dispatching a helicopter<\/a> from roughly 18 miles away, the rescue team located Fields and Zelada a half-hour<b> <\/b>later.<b> <\/b>Even as she was being hoisted to safety, Fields said she struggled to remain calm, until she heard the reassuring words of a firefighter reminding her: \u201cYou\u2019re alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Sgt. John Gilbert, the coordinator for the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department\u2019s Montrose search-and-rescue team, told The Post that Zelada and Fields were lucky.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cWhen we have vehicles that go over the side, in that particular part of the roadway \u2026 we\u2019re normally dealing with a fatality,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Gilbert said his team had been alerted by the new Apple feature three times before, though rescuers weren\u2019t needed in the earlier instances, which included an accidental activation and a routine car crash.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">But Gilbert knew the coordinates from Fields\u2019s phone were inside the canyon, meaning the phone\u2019s owner was likely in danger. Without the alert from the<b> <\/b>phone, Gilbert said Fields and Zelada may have been stranded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a game changer,\u201d Gilbert said. \u201cThere are many incidents where we\u2019re an hour to an hour-and-a half behind the original emergency before we\u2019re even notified.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The helicopter flew Fields and Zelada to Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, where they said X-rays and CT scans displayed no major injuries.
