German multinational industrial engineering and steel production company ThyssenKrupp AG said today that it is fending off a cyberattack against its Materials Services division and corporate headquarters.<\/p>\n

The form of attack was not disclosed, with a spokesperson telling<\/a> Agence France Presse only that \u201cThyssenkrupp is currently the target of a cyberattack \u2014 presumably by organized crime\u201d and that \u201cat\u00a0the present time, no damage has been done, nor are there any indications that data has been stolen or modified.\u201d<\/p>\n

The attack is said to have been noticed at an early stage by the company\u2019s cybersecurity staff and efforts are underway to limit the attack and bring it to an end. No other sections of\u00a0ThyssenKrupp have been affected by the attack.<\/p>\n

No cybercriminal group has accepted responsibility for the attack as of the time of writing. Given the reference to limiting the attack, an obvious candidate would be ransomware, but until further details are provided, that\u2019s pure speculation.<\/p>\n

ThyssenKrupp has been the target of cyberattacks in the past. In 2016<\/a>, the company was hacked in a corporate espionage case that resulted in the theft of trade secrets. The\u00a0hackers stole project data from ThyssenKrupp\u2019s plant engineering division.<\/p>\n

In 2012<\/a>,\u00a0ThyssenKrupp was targeted in an attack that\u00a0was described at the time as \u201cheavy\u201d and of an \u201cexceptional quality.\u201d Like the 2016 attack, espionage was the suspected motivation for the attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cCyberattacks on ThyssenKrupp AG are another example of increasing risks to industrial organizations and the global supply chain,\u201d\u00a0Duncan Greatwood, chief executive officer of zero-trust security company Xage Security Inc.<\/a>, told SiliconANGLE. \u201cIn fact, cyber risks are now spreading from energy and utility sectors and making their way into the manufacturing sector \u2013 such as steel manufacturing and heavy industries \u2013 in an effort to cause massive chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greatwood believes that corporate mindsets need to shift from not just detecting and responding to cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, but blocking them from inception.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrevention is possible, even once the threat has infiltrated the network or compromised some systems,\u201d Greatwood added. \u201cAccelerating implementation of preventive cybersecurity capabilities should be a key priority for industrial organizations and critical infrastructure operators in 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n
