As the dust settles on the COVID pandemic, fewer industries were more affected than cruise ship operators. With customer experience now more important than ever, Royal Caribbean Group has partnered with Cisco Systems Inc. to build applications that deliver consistent end-user value.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have really worked hard<\/span>\u00a0to improve and remove friction from our guest vacation,<\/span>\u00a0we want to keep them on vacation and having a great time,\u201d said Alice McElroy<\/a>, director of IT service management at Royal Caribbean.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cWe say we don\u2019t really sell a cruise,<\/span>\u00a0we sell an experience.<\/span>\u00a0So we use AppDynamics to monitor those key applications<\/span>\u00a0that our guests are interacting with to ensure<\/span>\u00a0that they\u2019re having that experience that we expect.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

McElroy and\u00a0Gregg Ostrowski<\/a> (pictured, right), executive chief technology officer of AppDynamics, part of Cisco Systems Inc., spoke with theCUBE industry analyst\u00a0Savannah Peterson<\/a>\u00a0ahead of\u00a0<\/span>AWS re:Invent<\/span><\/a>, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio. They discussed the cruciality of observability and performance monitoring, particularly in the cruise industry. <\/span>(* Disclosure below.)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Fewer eyes on glass, more automation<\/h3>\n

With the world digitally transforming at an unprecedented rate, consumers are placing increasing importance on digital products such as websites and applications. In fact, Cisco\u2019s recent App Attention Index saw 84% of respondents report that digital services are instrumental to regaining some pre-pandemic normalcy, according to Ostrowski.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe interesting part that came about is that<\/span>\u00a0out of those respondents, 60% of them blame the brand<\/span>\u00a0if the application did not work the way they expected it,\u201d he continued. \u201c<\/span>So they didn\u2019t really care about the complexity<\/span>\u00a0in the backend.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Essentially, as companies work to expand app abilities, it generates a sprawl in the technology stack. This sprawling can be difficult to manage without adequate observability and application performance tools, further leading to functionality issues. So, while Royal Caribbean suffered in terms of traveler numbers, it was able to manage operations when things quickly picked back up, according to McElroy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did take a hit<\/span>\u00a0but we were able to use the AppDynamics tools<\/span>\u00a0to ensure that our systems were running<\/span>\u00a0with fewer people also watching those systems.<\/span>\u00a0So less eyes on glass, more automation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
