{"id":24566,"date":"2022-12-19T22:30:19","date_gmt":"2022-12-19T22:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/index.php\/2022\/12\/19\/gpus-dodge-price-hike-as-us-extends-china-tariff-deadline-the-register\/"},"modified":"2022-12-19T22:30:19","modified_gmt":"2022-12-19T22:30:19","slug":"gpus-dodge-price-hike-as-us-extends-china-tariff-deadline-the-register","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/index.php\/2022\/12\/19\/gpus-dodge-price-hike-as-us-extends-china-tariff-deadline-the-register\/","title":{"rendered":"GPUs dodge price hike as US extends China tariff deadline \u2022 The Register"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/go.fiverr.com\/visit\/?bta=1052423&nci=17043\" Target=\"_Top\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fiverr.ck-cdn.com\/tn\/serve\/?cid=40081059\"  width=\"601\" height=\"201\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"body\">\n<p>Those fearing that graphics cards could see a significant price increase due to US tariffs returning for certain Chinese components can take a sigh of relief \u2014 for now.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of the United States Trade Representative <a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/about-us\/policy-offices\/press-office\/press-releases\/2022\/december\/ustr-extends-exclusions-china-section-301-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced<\/a> on Friday that it will continue to exclude graphics cards and hundreds of other components from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2018\/09\/18\/us_china_tech_tariffs_200bn\/\">tariffs<\/a> that were originally put on more than $300 billion in imports from China by the Trump administration in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2018\/03\/23\/trump_china_tariffs\/\">2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The exclusions for the 352 products exported from China [<a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/notices\/FRN%20for%20Notice%20of%20Reinstatement.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\">PDF<\/a>] were set to expire <a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/about-us\/policy-offices\/press-office\/press-releases\/2022\/march\/ustr-issues-determination-reinstatement-certain-exclusions-china-section-301-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow\">on New Year&#8217;s Eve<\/a>, but the US trade office said it will continue to not slap tariffs on the components for another nine months. After all, the Biden administration has been aggressively ramping up <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/10\/07\/biden_china_chips\/\" rel=\"noopener\">trade restrictions<\/a> against China in recent months to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/10\/21\/economic_cold_war_looms_as\/\" rel=\"noopener\">defang its semiconductor industry<\/a>, with the goal of hurting its economic and military power.<\/p>\n<p>Whether to end the Trump-era tariffs on Chinese exports has been a heated discussion within the White House, as we noted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/07\/05\/biden_mulls_removal_of_trumpera\/\">back in July<\/a>. On one end, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen reportedly argued that ending tariffs would help calm inflation. On the other, US trade representative Katherine Tai worried that removing tariffs would hurt Uncle Sam&#8217;s negotiation power with China.<\/p>\n<p>The US first issued the tariffs under 2018 after a nearly seven-month investigation [<a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/Section%20301%20FINAL.PDF\" rel=\"nofollow\">PDF<\/a>] by the US trade office found evidence of what the Trump administration considered &#8220;unfair&#8221; trade policies and practices from China. This included rampant intellectual property theft and hacking attacks on American companies.<\/p>\n<p>This led the US and China to reach a trade deal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2019\/12\/13\/china_us_pause_trade_war\/\">in 2019<\/a> in phase one of negotiations. The deal required China to make structural reforms and changes to intellectual property, technology transfer and financial services.
