With <em>Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion<\/em>, I find myself falling somewhere in the middle. As a remaster of 2007\u2019s\u00a0<em>Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII<\/em>, one of my most cherished games from my teenage years, it certainly gets me feeling warm and nostalgic. But it also makes me see that <em>Crisis Core<\/em> \u2014 a prequel to<a href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2022\/07\/29\/final-fantasy-vii-25th-anniversary-personal-essay-what-ffvii-means-to-me\/\" data-lasso-id=\"585638\"> my all-time favourite game,\u00a0<\/a><em>Final Fantasy VII\u00a0<\/em>\u2014 is definitely rougher around the edges than I\u2019d thought.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CRISIS CORE \u2013FINAL FANTASY VII\u2013 REUNION | More Than A Remaster\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fH3App7EPf8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The end result is an experience that I overall enjoyed revisiting, especially since it\u2019s been stranded on the PSP, but also definitely view in a different, more complicated light. As a result, my willingness to recommend it to non-<em>VII\u00a0<\/em>purists, especially those who were introduced to the mythos through <a href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2021\/06\/12\/final-fantasy-vii-remake-intergrade-ps5-review\/\" data-lasso-id=\"585639\">2020\u2019s incredible <em>VII Remake<\/em><\/a>, comes with a fair number of caveats.<\/p>\n<h2>A hero\u2019s (uneven) journey<\/h2>\n<p>Before we go further, it should be noted that this <em>Reunion <\/em>is, fundamentally, the same experience as the original PSP game, despite a litany of visual and gameplay changes. In particular, the story remains exactly the same, outside of a few odd words being changed. For the uninitiated, <em>Crisis Core<\/em>\u2018s narrative takes place years before <em>Final Fantasy VII\u00a0<\/em>and follows young Shinra SOLDIER Zack Fair as he pursues a rogue SOLDIER named Genesis who has ties to his mentor, Angeal, and iconic <em>VII <\/em>villain Sephiroth. Zack is also the best friend of\u00a0<em>VII\u00a0<\/em>hero Cloud, so a big part of\u00a0<em>Crisis Core<\/em>\u2018s appeal is learning more about a pivotal character who had very little screentime in the original 1997 classic.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a premise with significant potential, then, but unfortunately, the game doesn\u2019t fully capitalize on it. In particular, the dialogue is oftentimes incredibly stilted, resulting in meaningful character interactions falling flat. Although the original <em>VII\u00a0<\/em>has an infamously botched English translation, it was still never less than serviceable. <em>Crisis Core<\/em>, however, just suffers from some awful writing, period. And because this is a straight remaster, it doesn\u2019t benefit from the extensively revised and genuinely well-written script treatment that was given to <em>Remake<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_902440\" style=\"width: 1930px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-902440\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-902440 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-genesis.jpg\" alt=\"Crisis Core Genesis\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-genesis.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-genesis-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-genesis-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-genesis-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-genesis-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-genesis-417x235.jpg 417w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-genesis-800x450.jpg 800w\" data-sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-902440\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Genesis, pictured on the screen, is a pretty weak villain, especially compared to Sephiroth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Some of <em>Crisis Core<\/em>\u2018s plot beats are also painfully derivative of <em>VII.<\/em> Take Genesis, whose villainous turn as an ex-SOLDIER seeking revenge against Shinra is a decidedly less interesting retread of Sephiroth\u2019s story in <em>VII<\/em>. Making him even blander is his annoying proclivity to recite lines of poetry in <em>literally every single scene<\/em>; he comes off more as an angsty teenager than a genuinely threatening foe like Sephiroth. The fact that he lacks any real personal connection to Zack only made me more disconnected from him as a character.<\/p>\n<p>But where\u00a0<em>Crisis Core<\/em> succeeds, even to this day, is in its portrayal of Zack. As a nice contrast to the stoic and sullen Cloud, Zack is energetic, optimistic and bubbly. Unlike Cloud, he begins his journey na\u00efvely wanting to become a big hero at Shinra, but over the course of the campaign matures enough to question his role in everything, leading him on a path to discover what true heroism really means. There\u2019s a lovely sincerity to this arc that feels even more refreshing in 2022; where many modern stories might be afraid of such joke-free sentimentality, Square Enix fully commits to it in earnest. It makes Zack an extremely likeable and compelling lead and creates a strong emotional investment in his story, especially in the game\u2019s heartwrenching third act. Zack\u2019s a character who I\u2019ve held dear for many years, and I\u2019m overjoyed that his story remains as gripping as ever.<\/p>\n<p>Credit should also be given for how\u00a0<em>Crisis Core<\/em> enhances pre-existing elements of <em>VII, <\/em>like Sephiroth, whose more loyal and caring side in the prequel<em>\u00a0<\/em>works wonders in humanizing him before his inevitable fall from grace. Similarly, the fresh-faced Cloud\u2019s lovable friendship with Zack adds weight to his character development in <em>VII<\/em>, and the same goes for Aerith and her burgeoning romance with Zack. The game could have benefited from exploring these threads more thoroughly, but what we get is undeniably solid. <em>Crisis Core\u00a0<\/em>also fleshes out the world of\u00a0<em>VII\u00a0<\/em>in some novel ways, be that through unpacking the inner workings of Shinra or showing more of the everyday people affected by the company. Thankfully, character- and world-building efforts make up for the more unsavoury elements of the story.<\/p>\n<h2>A stunning glow-up<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-902438 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20220812_cutscene_02.png\" alt=\"Crisis Core Zack and Cloud\" width=\"3840\" height=\"2160\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20220812_cutscene_02.png 3840w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20220812_cutscene_02-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20220812_cutscene_02-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20220812_cutscene_02-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20220812_cutscene_02-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20220812_cutscene_02-2048x1152.png 2048w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20220812_cutscene_02-417x235.png 417w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20220812_cutscene_02-800x450.png 800w\" data-sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3840px) 100vw, 3840px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0<em>Crisis Core <\/em>remains a mixed bag in the narrative department,\u00a0the remaster graciously makes sweeping improvements in both visuals and gameplay.<\/p>\n<p>With respect to the former, this is easily one of the most impressive graphical remasters I\u2019ve ever seen.\u00a0Using Unreal Engine 4, Square Enix and co-developer Tose have overhauled every aspect of the visuals to make <em>Crisis Core<\/em> look like a modern game. All of the character models look much sharper, particularly with their now sleek, shiny and smooth skin and hair, and that attention to detail has also carried over to pretty much everything else. Robot enemies have tons of little scuff marks on them to show wear and tear, particle effects from magic attacks are plentiful and dazzling, and fires and smoke flicker with realistic flair. It\u2019s not <em>quite\u00a0<\/em>as gorgeous as <a href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2020\/05\/01\/final-fantasy-vii-remake-playstation-4-review\/\" data-lasso-id=\"587020\"><em>Final Fantasy VII Remake<\/em><\/a>, but it\u2019s remarkably close, especially for an upgrade of a nearly 15-year-old game.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the pristine visuals only highlight the more dated elements of the visual presentation. For one, characters still have the same canned animations in several interactions, which can feel repetitive. Worse still is the fact that the PSP game\u2019s once-impressive CG cutscenes haven\u2019t been remastered, resulting in some jarringly blurry cinematics on a 4K TV. These are relatively brief and only happen periodically throughout the roughly 12-hour campaign, but it still would have been nice for them to get some form of enhancement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-902443 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-scorpion.jpg\" alt=\"Crisis Core Scorpion\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-scorpion.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-scorpion-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-scorpion-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-scorpion-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-scorpion-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-scorpion-417x235.jpg 417w, https:\/\/cdn.mobilesyrup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/crisis-core-scorpion-800x450.jpg 800w\" data-sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/>Also spotty are the newly recorded voiceovers, which have several of <em>Remake<\/em>\u2018s new cast reprise their roles instead of the original PSP actors. This includes Caleb Pearce as Zack, Cody Christian as Cloud, Tyler Hoechlin as Sephiroth and Briana White as Aerith. Admittedly, some of these changes were for the better; Christian and White, in particular, bring a lot of charm to their respective roles. But Pearce often feels miscast as Zack, with his nasally tones coming off as more annoying than anything, especially compared to the character\u2019s original actor, Rick Gomez, who delivered a far better performance all-around. This surely won\u2019t be much of an issue for newcomers, of course, but it\u2019s certainly one for many returning players like me.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cMore than a remaster\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Unlike the original\u00a0<em>FFVII<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Crisis Core\u00a0<\/em>features real-time combat, allowing Zack to perform basic sword attacks in conjunction with Materia-enabled spells and other abilities. In\u00a0<em>Reunion<\/em>, that system has been refined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.square-enix-games.com\/en_EU\/news\/crisis-core-final-fantasy-vii-reunion-more-than-a-remaster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"585643\">in several key ways<\/a> to make it feel significantly better across the board. For one, the input limitations of the PSP meant that all of Zack\u2019s commands had to be toggled horizontally with the handheld\u2019s side buttons. <em>Reunion<\/em>, however, allows you to map your moves to shortcuts, removing that clunkiness and freeing you up to get more into the action.<\/p>\n<p><em>Reunion\u00a0<\/em>also cleans up the Digital Mind Wave (DMW), a roulette-esque mechanic that rolls automatically throughout battles and allows Zack to perform special offensive or stat-boosting \u2018Limit Break\u2019 moves depending on whichever character is spun. The idea is that this represents Zack\u2019s mental state and might result in some characters, like Cloud or Sephiroth, being rolled more often depending on recent plot points. It\u2019s a neat storytelling technique that illustrates Zack\u2019s loyalty to his friends through gameplay, although it felt intrusive at times in the original game due to the associated cutscenes (Zack\u2019s memories) that would play and disrupt the flow of combat. DMW moves would also be used automatically, reducing player agency. None of this is a problem in <em>Reunion<\/em>, as you can choose to skip DMW scenes and bank Limit Breaks to use at will. Even with these changes, <em>Reunion <\/em>by no means feels as fast, fluid or engaging as <em>Remake<\/em>, but it\u2019s an understandable shortcoming considering it\u2019s been built on the bones of a PSP game. For what it is, though, <em>Reunion\u00a0<\/em>is definitely an entertaining and easy-to-pick-up action-RPG.<\/p>\n<p>In a similar vein, I have to be a bit more forgiving of the game\u2019s environments. While they look exponentially prettier now in <em>Reunion<\/em>, they\u2019re still woefully linear and generic in terms of actual structure. This is especially true in the game\u2019s <em>many<\/em> sidequests, which consist of Zack just running through the same bland caves, forests and mountains to hunt monsters. There\u2019s very little in the way of story in these missions, so your only incentive to do them is to receive lucrative new Materia and gear, which play into the addictive Materia Fusion system. <em>Crisis Core<\/em>\u2018s portable DNA is most prominent in such environments, as Square Enix clearly intended for these bite-sized missions to be completed on the go. They\u2019re trite, to be sure, but at least they\u2019re optional.<\/p>\n<h2>The price of freedom<\/h2>\n<p>In the end,\u00a0<em>Crisis Core Reunion\u00a0<\/em>is a bit tricky to recommend. If you\u2019re someone who played and enjoyed the original PSP game, <em>Reunion\u00a0<\/em>is a must-play many graphical and mechanical improvements. But those who have only played <em>FFVII Remake<\/em> should be wary of going into <em>Reunion<\/em> with the assumption that this is<em>\u00a0<\/em>anywhere near the same quality. Still, if wonky writing, relatively simple combat and repetitive side missions aren\u2019t deal-breakers, then <em>Reunion\u00a0<\/em>is certainly worth checking out.
