were <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/03\/15\/intel_germany_europe_investment\/\" rel=\"noopener\">disclosed<\/a> in March, the investment required for building the site was estimated at \u20ac17 billion ($18 billion), but Intel now claims the cost has risen to about \u20ac20 billion, and the company wants the German government to increase the amount it is offering in subsidies, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>As <em>The Register<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/06\/08\/intel_germany_tsmc\/\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> in early summer, Intel was already due to receive \u20ac6.8 billion ($7.2 billion) in subsidies from the German government, covering nearly 40 percent of the then expected cost of construction at the Magdeburg site.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/systems&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y6CJileFiq6RTwSi2P@QPwAAAEc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/systems&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y6CJileFiq6RTwSi2P@QPwAAAEc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>The German government had <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/05\/06\/germany_chipmaker_subsidies\/\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier said<\/a> that it was willing to offer a total of up to \u20ac14 billion ($14.85 billion) in state aid to encourage chipmakers to set up shop in the country.<\/p>\n<p>It isn&#8217;t clear whether Intel is merely angling for more funding to help cover the increased cost of building its fabrication plant or whether the company is having second thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>If it decides not to proceed, this would be a big blow not just for Germany, but for the wider European Union, which announced plans in February to ramp up European semiconductor design and manufacturing with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/02\/08\/european_chips_act\/\" rel=\"noopener\">European Chips Act<\/a>.
