Twitter Inc. has banned promotional links to rival social networks as Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk has decided to run a poll on whether he should remain in his position as the head of the microblogging service.<\/p>\n

The new \u201cpromotion of alternative social networks policy\u201d bans the free promotion of specific social media platforms on Twitter. The particular platforms covered by the ban<\/a> are Facebook, Instagram, Mastadon, Truth Social, Tribel, Post and Nostr, along with media link aggregators such as linktr.ee and Ink.bio.<\/p>\n

The ban seemingly does not prohibit all linking to rival services as opposed to specific promotion of them, even down to a personal level. Examples of links banned on Twitter include \u201cfollow me @username on Instagram,\u201d \u201cusername@mastadon.social\u201d and \u201ccheck out my profile on Facebook \u2013 facebook.com\/username.\u201d<\/p>\n

Accounts used for the main purpose of promoting content on another platform may be suspended. Twitter is also prohibiting any attempts to bypass restrictions such as URL cloaking and plaintext obfuscation, including the substitution of \u201cdot\u201d for social media platforms that use \u201c.\u201d in their names to avoid URL creation. Screenshots from rival services that feature a user\u2019s handle are also prohibited.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recognize that certain social media platforms provide alternative experiences to Twitter and allow users to post content to Twitter from these platforms,\u201d Twitter states. \u201cIn general, any type of cross-posting to our platform is not in violation of this policy, even from the prohibited sites listed above.\u201d In plain speak, a user could still presumably share an Instagram photo to Twitter but cannot include the words \u201cfollow me on @username on Instagram\u201d with the picture.<\/p>\n

If the policy is breached, Twitter reserves the right to apply temporary account locks and in the case of multiple offenses, permanently delete accounts. The rules also apply to bios and account names.<\/p>\n

The rule change was announced on the same day that Musk took to Twitter with a poll that asked \u201cShould I step down as head of Twitter?\u201d followed by \u201cI will abide by the results of this poll.\u201d As of the time of writing, yes was sitting at 57.6%.<\/p>\n

Buried in the ongoing soap opera that is Twitter under Musk\u2019s leadership, there was also a new Twitter files dump<\/a> that once again highlighted the relationship between Twitter under its previous management and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.<\/p>\n

The new release provided details of communications between former Twitter executive Yoel Roth and San Francisco FBI agent Elvis Chan. Previous Twitter file releases have raised concerns as they showed that the FBI was having Twitter take down content, including parody accounts, possibly in breach of the first amendment which bars the government from abridging freedom of speech.<\/p>\n
