A day after Twitter suspended several journalists who cover Elon Musk, it appears the company has reversed course and restored the accounts. <\/p>\n

The move comes after Musk held a Twitter poll<\/a> asking whether the accounts should be restored \u201cNow\u201d or \u201cIn 7 days.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people have spoken,\u201d the tech company\u2019s controversial multibillionaire owner wrote in a tweet<\/a> Friday night. \u201cAccounts who doxxed my location will have their suspension lifted now.\u201d<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s back-and-forth began Wednesday when Twitter banned an account<\/a> tracking the publicly available whereabouts of Musk\u2019s private jet.<\/p>\n

That account, called @ElonJet, remained suspended as of Friday night. <\/p>\n

Among the journalists suspended Thursday were Ryan Mac from the New York Times, Donie O’Sullivan from CNN, Matt Binder from Mashable, Drew Harwell from the Washington Post, political pundit Keith Olbermann and Steve Herman from the government-funded Voice of America. Musk had suggested Thursday night that the suspensions would last seven days.<\/p>\n

Harwell\u2019s last post before being suspended was about Twitter removing the account of one of its competitors, Mastodon, for posting a link to its own version of the @ElonJet account that tracked Musk\u2019s plane, according to a tweet<\/a> from NBC News reporter Ben Collins. (Mastodon\u2019s Twitter account was also suspended Thursday.)<\/p>\n

Olbermann\u2019s last tweet<\/a> asked people to re-create word for word Harwell\u2019s post and link to an article<\/a> by independent journalist Aaron Rupar, whose account was also suspended, that criticized Musk for his \u201cpopulist cosplay\u201d while being one of the richest men in the world.<\/p>\n

While most of the accounts suspended the night before appeared to have been restored by Friday night, Olbermann\u2019s account did not come up in a search. <\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Twitter announced a policy update<\/a> that prohibited the sharing of \u201clive location information, including information shared on Twitter directly or links to 3rd-party URL(s) of travel routes.\u201d<\/p>\n

It appeared that the suspended accounts could still participate in Twitter Spaces, as several of the banned journalists discussed the news in a live audio chat room Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Musk joined briefly to confirm that posting a link to a page that provided real-time location tracking, such as @ElonJet, was \u201cban evasion\u201d and no different from directly posting live locations.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou show the link to real-time information, ban evasion,\u201d Musk said. \u201cYou dox, you get suspended, end of story, that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musk\u2019s apparent connection of the reporters\u2019 suspensions to doxxing drew swift criticism as people pointed out that the reporters did not share any location data or provide real-time tracking. <\/p>\n
