On the hardware side, its fans screamed like \u201ctiny banshees,\u201d and its battery was almost impossible to switch out should it eventually die. To combat this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23499215\/valve-steam-deck-interview-late-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steam Deck developer Valve is releasing updated models<\/a> with quieter cooling fans and easier extraction of the battery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Steam Deck has issues. We asked the devs what they&#039;re doing to fix it. | Battery life, Verified\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Yk497lW1-xU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Months after its release, I preordered the device myself. I surprisingly got it a week or so later (perhaps I\u2019ve gotten used to the incredibly taxing journey that is securing a PlayStation 5). In my testing, I can determine that these hardware issues simply aren\u2019t the make-or-break factors for the console anymore. The two bigger issues that\u2019ll determine your enjoyment with the console are on the software side: the content you can actually play, and the Steam Deck\u2019s overall battery life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Below are some key factors to consider before purchasing a Steam Deck this holiday season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<h5 data-qa=\"article-header\" class=\" pb-sm pt-lgmod\" id=\"JK5O4FWRDRATBEBHIRC62JV3MU\">\n<p>Check the Steam page for a game\u2019s Steam Deck compatibility<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Developer Valve\u2019s Verified system is a godsend. Essentially, Valve testers play through a game on a Steam Deck to determine if it runs smoothly, if the controls map well to the buttons on the device and if the overall experience isn\u2019t hindered by the smaller real estate of the handheld\u2019s screen, such as game text becoming illegible. After testing, a game will receive one of three icons: a green check mark that means it\u2019s fully playable, a yellow \u201ci\u201d indicating the game works but needs some graphical or control tweaks in-game to function properly or a slash sign indicating the game simply does not work on the device. A fourth icon, a question mark, indicates testing hasn\u2019t begun on that particular title yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Before getting a Steam Deck, <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/greatondeck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">check the Verified section<\/a> of the Steam store (or simply scroll down your game\u2019s page and check the right-hand side) to see which symbol it received. This should absolutely be your first step before purchasing a Steam Deck.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Valve is pretty fast when it comes to testing games of all varieties and providing frequent updates for its OS to maximize compatibility (the recently released <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1766740\/ChooChoo_Charles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Choo-Choo Charles<\/a> is a prime example of this). However, some updates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dexerto.com\/tech\/steam-deck-support-for-ea-titles-broken-after-major-change-1973061\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have ended up breaking several games\u2019 compatibility<\/a>, notably several EA games, so it\u2019s important to frequently check the Verified status to ensure things are working while Valve irons out the device\u2019s kinks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<h5 data-qa=\"article-header\" class=\" pb-sm pt-lgmod\" id=\"WPNZPF3SNZAEHHJZ54B237OEDQ\">\n<p>Don\u2019t worry if a game as a yellow \u201ci\u201d status \u2014 it\u2019s still very playable<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Even given the advice above, don\u2019t shy away from the Steam Deck if the game you want to play receives a yellow \u201ci.\u201d In my experience with the console, several games with this status worked, including \u201cDeep Rock Galactic,\u201d \u201cAmong Us\u201d and \u201cTeam Fortress 2.\u201d The major issues holding these games up were small text, which sometimes can be increased in-game, and the need for keyboard inputs, which, while clunky, can be toggled easily by pressing the Steam button and X together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cWe don\u2019t want anybody to think that this set of games that get the green checkbox, that\u2019s [all you can play on Steam Deck]. It really isn\u2019t,\u201d assures Jay Shaw, a designer working on the Steam Deck. \u201cCustomers will find that so many of their games will work well, regardless of the verification status.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">However, if the game you\u2019re interested in relies heavily on the point-and-click functionality of a mouse, it\u2019s probably not a great game the play on a Steam Deck, regardless of its verification status. \u201cDwarf Fortress,\u201d for example, while receiving an \u201ci,\u201d became a chore to play due to how frequently you need precise mouse movement, and the Steam Deck\u2019s trackpads and controls don\u2019t really allow for that kind of finesse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<h5 data-qa=\"article-header\" class=\" pb-sm pt-lgmod\" id=\"IENLCME7OBFHZA6W4BXHPVXOIM\">\n<p>Research graphical settings and control scheme quirks<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Sometimes the Steam Deck port overlooks a few things in its translation to a handheld setup. One game I tested, \u201cFinal Fantasy XV,\u201d didn\u2019t map an input on the controller to pressing down on the PS4\/5\u2019s touchpad. This was pretty big, as that\u2019s the way you open the main menu and equip your party, and the game doesn\u2019t allow you to change this input via in-game options.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Fortunately, the Steam Deck allows you to change button bindings if you push the Steam button, click the game you\u2019re playing and keep hitting right until you see the mapping screen. Several games \u2014 even those with green check marks \u2014 overlook small quality-of-life things like this, so it\u2019s important to think through your games and research if a control quirk like that may be missing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2022\/12\/12\/best-video-games-2022\/?itid=sf_video-games-news&amp;itid=lk_interstitial_manual_28\">The best video games of 2022<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The same goes for graphical settings. While it may be tempting to maximize the fidelity of your games, more often than not this comes at a cost to performance, like frame rate, and a <i>major <\/i>cost to battery life. In our testing with 2018\u2019s \u201cGod of War,\u201d we found that the max settings only allowed us approximately an hour and a half to two hours of battery life , while tweaking the settings to medium quality afforded us an extra hour.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamesn.com\/stray\/best-settings-performance-benchmarks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Several websites<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/SteamDeck\/comments\/ufbkdo\/elden_ring_steam_deck_optimized_settings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forums<\/a> feature posts from early adopters of the Steam Deck who have researched which settings are optimal for performance and battery life in several games. Research them and determine if you\u2019re comfortable with the graphics quality suggested.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<h5 data-qa=\"article-header\" class=\" pb-sm pt-lgmod\" id=\"PQQ5UQ4PLNFR7GLANJZUEVHXIU\">\n<p>Check for anti-cheat, which can make some games incompatible<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Several popular games aren\u2019t compatible with the Steam Deck thanks to anti-cheat measures. These include \u201cFall Guys,\u201d \u201cFortnite\u201d and \u201cDestiny 2.\u201d Valve\u2019s developers promise to continue working on compatibility for these games, but they admit that they\u2019ll need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23499215\/valve-steam-deck-interview-late-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cooperation from other parties like Epic Games<\/a> to overcome anti-cheat systems like Easy Anti-Cheat. This makes the time frame for when the games will become available on Steam Deck a little murky, which may influence your purchase.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<h5 data-qa=\"article-header\" class=\" pb-sm pt-lgmod\" id=\"HMHZH4O6KVBPDAN52LMQJLMPJU\">\n<p>Mod compatibility with the Deck is inconsistent \u2014 don\u2019t rely on it working<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In my testing with the Steam Deck, I found that mods \u2014 both available via Steam Workshop and off-site via Nexus \u2014 sometimes worked and sometimes didn\u2019t. \u201cFinal Fantasy XV,\u201d \u201cFallout 3\u201d and \u201cStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order\u201d (before it became incompatible with the Steam Deck) offered varying degrees of success, with little rhyme or reason as to what worked versus what didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2022\/11\/18\/best-video-game-gifts-holiday-2022\/?itid=sf_video-games-news&amp;itid=lk_interstitial_manual_35\">Need gifts for a gamer this holiday season? We\u2019ve got recommendations.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">While the issues may lay on the side of the people responsible for creating such mods, one thing is for certain \u2014 it\u2019s probably not wise to rely on mods fully working on the Deck, especially if the game doesn\u2019t receive the green check mark.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<h5 data-qa=\"article-header\" class=\" pb-sm pt-lgmod\" id=\"JEPAMRX42RGKXLP4IDMNNE3YRM\">\n<p>Consider the Steam Deck\u2019s battery life, and how you\u2019d typically like to use it<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Battery life was a huge issue when the Steam Deck first released. Fortunately, several OS updates appear to have improved this slightly. Less demanding games like \u201cUndertale\u201d played for around 6 1\/2 hours before battery depletion \u2014 that\u2019s more time than a flight from Washington D.C. to San Francisco. Other high-fidelity games like \u201cMarvel\u2019s Spider-Man: Miles Morales\u201d depleted in a little under 3 hours.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">If you\u2019re using it at home as a replacement for a high-quality PC to play games, then the Steam Deck is a no-brainer purchase.
