And I\u2019ll also address where experts told me YouTube still falls short.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">What I hope you take away from this is an awareness of how YouTube\u2019s choices shape what your kid (and you) are likely to watch. That knowledge should not make you feel guilty or manipulated. Think of this as data to help you make informed choices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">And if you\u2019re screaming \u201cNO WAY\u201d to kids watching YouTube, that\u2019s fine! But the reality is that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2020\/07\/28\/parental-views-about-youtube\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> most American children<\/a> are watching YouTube \u2014 with or without their caregivers. That means kids and grown-ups can benefit from learning to get the most from YouTube and peering behind its curtain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Next week in The Tech Friend, I\u2019ll be back with practical advice to help your family make good use of YouTube and other digital media.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Let me rewind to YouTube\u2019s big change in 2021, and how the company says that is remodeling the experience for kids on the world\u2019s most popular video site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In consultation with child development experts, YouTube created guidelines for what it considered<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/10774223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \u201chigh-quality\u201d videos for children and families<\/a>. And it started to<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/news-and-events\/our-responsibility-approach-protecting-kids-and-families-youtube\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> reward<\/a> those videos by recommending them more often and giving those video creators more opportunities to earn money from ads in videos.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The guidelines applied to both YouTube Kids, a separate app for younger children, and for kids-oriented videos on the main YouTube site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">What YouTube did, essentially, was to put its computer programs, its popularity and its wallet behind a push for entertainment that the company believed was good for kids.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">YouTube considers videos high quality if, for example, they encourage children to brush their teeth, show creative activities like arts and crafts or teach life skills such as problem solving. Videos with overly commercial messages or that put children\u2019s characters in \u201cobjectionable situations\u201d would be circulated less on YouTube under the policy change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">At least on paper, this was a significant shift. Many of the most popular kids YouTube videos have featured children unwrapping new toys or doing other materialistic things. YouTube has also been forced to confront the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-switch\/wp\/2017\/12\/05\/google-now-wants-more-humans-to-help-solve-the-problem-of-child-exploitation-on-youtube\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> prevalence<\/a> of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-switch\/wp\/2015\/05\/19\/children-can-get-all-kinds-of-stuff-on-youtube-kids-like-ads-for-beer-and-profane-cartoons\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> disturbing videos related to kids<\/a>, including one<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/blogs-trending-39381889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> featuring<\/a> an off-brand Peppa Pig being tortured at the dentist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">YouTube constantly changes its computer programs to emphasize some kinds of programming over others. And last year<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-01\/youtube-overhauled-its-algorithms-for-kids-content-amid-ftc-talks?sref=Qk91czAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> wasn\u2019t the first time<\/a> that YouTube tried to prioritize higher-quality children\u2019s videos. But a 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/docs-cdn-prod.news-engineering.aws.wapo.pub\/publish_document\/fc1e27fa-8fa9-467f-9fa2-60f13876b3f4\/published\/fc1e27fa-8fa9-467f-9fa2-60f13876b3f4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research study<\/a> found that about three-quarters of YouTube videos watched in an analysis of children eight or younger had \u201cno or weak educational value.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">YouTube says the changes it started to make a year ago are working. YouTube told me that viewership of videos incorporating the high-quality principles has increased by more than 45 percent in its YouTube Kids app.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">There are three huge caveats to YouTube\u2019s measure of progress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">First, YouTube is giving specific data only for videos viewed on its Kids app, which has a fraction of the viewership of the main YouTube site. On regular YouTube, the company said viewership of high-quality kids programming has increased but not as much as it did on the Kids app.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Second, it\u2019s impossible for outsiders to verify what apps such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok say people are doing within their digital walls. If YouTube says kids are spending more time watching high-quality videos, we have to take YouTube\u2019s word for it \u2014 or not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">And third, what counts as \u201chigh quality\u201d is subjective. Plus, if you search YouTube for kids stuff, and you\u2019ll see plenty of mindless junk and lots of wonderful videos, too. That <i>is<\/i> YouTube.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In my conversations with specialists in children\u2019s development and education, including one who advised YouTube on its children\u2019s video guidelines, they said YouTube was rigorous, committed and humble about what makes for enriching children\u2019s entertainment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">But they also said that there may be only so much YouTube can do to stress educational value within the company\u2019s commercial mission.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Ultimately, YouTube\u2019s guiding principle is giving people what they find engaging. And garbage is engaging for kids and adults alike.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cThe current way that the internet gets engagement is at odds with designing what will be meaningful from a children\u2019s perspective,\u201d said Jenny Radesky, a developmental behavioral pediatrician at the University of Michigan\u2019s C.S. Mott Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>For more on technology and kids:<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u27a6 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/10\/13\/what-age-kid-first-phone\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At what age should you give a kid their first phone<\/a>?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u27a6 Congress has been considering two potential new laws to better protect children\u2019s privacy or safety online. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/12\/15\/senates-year-end-childrens-privacy-push-faces-uphill-climb\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The bills are stuck in the Senate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">You have the option to tell Google, which owns YouTube, not to save information about the videos you watch. It means YouTube will stop recommending videos to you based on what you\u2019ve watched in the past \u2014 which can be both great or annoying.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<ul class=\"font--article-body font-copy gray-darkest mt-0 mr-lg ml-lg mb-md list\">\n<li class=\"pb-xs\"><span>From Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/myactivity.google.com\/activitycontrols\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Activity controls<\/a> page, scroll down the YouTube History section. Toggle the switch off so that it is gray.
