This is reinforced under our #MediaFreedomAct,\u201d she wrote. &#8220;@elonmusk should be aware of that. There are red lines. And sanctions, soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Twitter suspended the accounts of several journalists on Thursday night, including from The Washington Post, the New York Times and CNN. Musk later accused the reporters of posting \u201cbasically assassination coordinates\u201d for him and his family \u2014 although he provided no evidence that any of the journalists had done so.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<div data-qa=\"article-video\" class=\"\">\n<div>\n<figure class=\"pt-xs mb-md mr-auto-ns ml-auto-ns hide-for-print ml-neg-gutter mr-neg-gutter\"><figcaption>\n<p>On Dec. 15, Twitter CEO Elon Musk joined a Twitter Spaces chat with several journalists in which he reiterated his claim that they had \u201cdoxed\u201d him. (Video: The Washington Post)<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The suspensions came a day after Twitter changed its rules to prohibit the sharing of \u201clive location information\u201d or other information that could show someone\u2019s location. The rule change came after Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/twitter-suspends-account-that-tracked-owner-elon-musks-jet\/2022\/12\/14\/b5ff43c2-7bcf-11ed-bb97-f47d47466b9a_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended the account of @ElonJet<\/a>, which tracked the flights of Musk\u2019s private plane using publicly available flight data.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Several journalists who had been covering and tweeting about the rule change and Musk\u2019s claims were then locked out of their accounts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/12\/14\/elonjet-twitter-suspension-jack-sweeney-talks\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_12\">Musk bans Twitter account tracking his jet, threatens to sue creator<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The European Union\u2019s Digital Services Act <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/04\/22\/european-lawmakers-digital-services\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seeks to force tech companies<\/a> to more aggressively police their platforms for illegal content and be more transparent about how their content moderation systems work. Companies will need to start reporting some information early next year, but <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/priorities-2019-2024\/europe-fit-digital-age\/digital-services-act-ensuring-safe-and-accountable-online-environment_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the legislation<\/a> doesn\u2019t fully kick in until 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The E.U. has often imposed stricter rules and cracked down more harshly on tech companies compared with other governments. The DSA is considered one of the most expansive regulations on social media to date. Musk has met with Thierry Breton, the bloc\u2019s internal markets commissioner, about getting Twitter ready for the law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">But the billionaire has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/22\/elon-musk-twitter-content-moderations\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dismantled much of Twitter\u2019s trust and safety team<\/a>, which helped craft and enforce the rules that users must follow on the site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Other criticism on Friday came from the German Foreign Ministry, which took to Twitter to warn the company that it takes freedom of the press seriously.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cFreedom of the press must not be switched on and off at will,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AuswaertigesAmt\/status\/1603689087969411072?s=20&amp;t=XL7MjbvZ-cqSyLKNTbOatg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it tweeted.<\/a> \u201cAs of today, the journalists below can no longer follow, comment or criticize us. We have a problem with that @Twitter.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Musk took over Twitter in a $44 billion deal in late October, pledging to make the site a haven for \u201cfree speech,\u201d much to the delight of some right-wing politicians and pundits who have accused social media companies, often baselessly, of censoring them in recent years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Musk\u2019s short time leading the company has been marked by upheaval.
