After Twitter suspended an account that had been providing publicly available flight data for Elon Musk\u2019s private jet, the social media platform\u2019s new owner and chief executive suggested that the page put him and his family in danger. <\/p>\n

In a three-tweet thread<\/a>, Musk said any account providing \u201creal-time\u201d location information of any person would be suspended because \u201cit is a physical safety violation.\u201d The billionaire also alleged that on Tuesday night, a \u201ccrazy stalker\u201d followed and climbed onto the hood of a car carrying Musk\u2019s son. <\/p>\n

Musk promised to take legal action against the college student who ran the flight-tracking account, which went by @ElonJet, and any \u201corganizations who supported harm to my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department said no police report had been filed about the incident that drew Musk\u2019s concern.<\/p>\n

\u201cLAPD\u2019s Threat Management Unit is aware of the situation and Tweet by Elon Musk and is in contact with his representatives and security team,\u201d the department said in a statement. \u201cNo crime reports have been filed yet.\u201d <\/p>\n

The police statement comes as Twitter and Musk face increasing scrutiny over a wave of suspensions, including several journalists who cover Musk. <\/p>\n

Among those whose accounts were suspended Thursday night are Ryan Mac from the New York Times, Donie O’Sullivan from CNN, Matt Binder from Mashable, Drew Harwell from the Washington Post, political pundit Keith Olbermann and Steve Herman from the government-funded Voice of America.<\/p>\n

Harwell\u2019s last post before being suspended was about Twitter removing the account of one of its competitors, Mastodon, for posting a link to its own version of the @ElonJet account that tracked Musk\u2019s plane, according to a tweet<\/a> from NBC News reporter Ben Collins.<\/p>\n

O’Sullivan and Binder\u2019s accounts were suspended after they shared the LAPD\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n

Musk, a self-described<\/a> free speech absolutist, vowed to make sweeping changes to the social media platform once he finalized his control over the company, though last month, he tweeted<\/a> that his \u201ccommitment to free speech extends even to not banning the account following my plane, even though that is a direct personal safety risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Twitter announced a policy update<\/a> that prohibited the sharing of \u201clive location information, including information shared on Twitter directly or links to 3rd-party URL(s) of travel routes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t make exceptions to this policy for journalists or any other accounts,\u201d Twitter\u2019s head of trust and safety, Ella Irwin told the Verge<\/a> via email.<\/p>\n

Thursday night, Musk posted several tweets responding to the journalists\u2019 account suspensions. <\/p>\n

\u201cCriticizing me all day long is totally fine, but doxxing my real-time location and endangering my family is not,\u201d one tweet<\/a> read.<\/p>\n

Musk also briefly joined a Twitter Spaces audio chat room in which several of the banned journalists were discussing the news.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou show the link to real-time information, ban evasion,\u201d Musk said. \u201cYou dox, you get suspended, end of story, that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Banned Washington Post tech reporter Harwell, who was also in the chat room, responded: \u201cThis is reporting … there is reporting value in public data.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
