Ana Milicevic, principal of Sparrow Advisers, Lisa Arnold, vice president of programmatic strategy at Dentsu, and Greg Watkins, founder of AllHipHop.com, sat down with Adweek during our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/adw_video_gallery\/nextech-2022\/\" data-type=\"adw_video_gallery\" data-id=\"1499785\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NexTech Summit<\/a> to discuss the state of the programmatic landscape and what changes are on the horizon.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Optimizing the supply path<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>According to Arnold, in 2023 and beyond, advertisers should focus on supply chain optimization. She added that in order to properly optimize supply chains, transparency and control are two key factors.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row justify-content-center\">\n<div class=\"col-12\">\n<section class=\"section section--teaser section--teaser_partners section--teaser_partners--horizontal px-0 py-4\">\n<div class=\"section--teaser_partner\"><a class=\"link-reset text-decoration-none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/programmatic\/scope3s-brian-okelley-on-the-greener-safer-future-of-programmatic-advertising\/\">            <picture class=\"image image--partner\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/static-prod.adweek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/scope3-nextech-2022-640x360.jpg.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/static-prod.adweek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/scope3-nextech-2022-640x360.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static-prod.adweek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/scope3-nextech-2022-640x360.jpg\" class=\"image\" alt=\"image\" title=\"\"\/>             <\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to SPO, our focus moving forward needs to be on continuing to use for increased transparency and control as we move toward an ideal state of clear, efficient supply paths for every impression we buy,\u201d she said. \u201cI think we know the supply side of the business is not where we want it to be when it comes from a programmatic buying perspective. So continuing to push for those things when we talk to our partners is hugely important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Milicevic added that in an environment of macroeconomic headwinds and a downturn in the advertising sector, if you don\u2019t optimize the supply chain, you\u2019ll have to cut media as a buyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want to do that because then coming out of a recession, you\u2019re not going to know whether something you\u2019ve done in your media mix has really impacted the ability to sell your product,\u201d she said. \u201cAs long as the people with the money on the buy side have this as a challenge, it behooves everyone to focus on optimization.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Evaluating your partners<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The trio agrees that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/programmatic\/how-ad-tech-is-bracing-for-a-life-after-the-cookie\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1120547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ad tech<\/a> moves in cycles, meaning what works at one point in time may be completely ineffective later on. This is why Milicevic stressed the importance of regularly reviewing your partners and taking all so-called best practices with a grain of salt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat also may mean the partners you\u2019ve been working with for the last several years have shifted in focus,\u201d she said. \u201cMaybe their offering is different. Maybe you\u2019re no longer locked into the same commercial arrangement as you were in the past. What every company should be doing is looking at its partnership ecosystem and reevaluating it at least once a year. In many cases, you will find that tiering how you approach different partners will provide value.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Identity takes a new role<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>With third-party cookie deprecation on the horizon, Watkins said he believes identity is going to be a big driver in the coming years.
