Helming the social media company has consumed much of Musk\u2019s schedule over the past several weeks; he has appeared on multiple audio chats and  tweeted photos working from the company\u2019s San Francisco headquarters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Now, some Tesla investors are calling for Musk to hand over the reins at one of his companies as the electric vehicle company\u2019s stock plummets \u2014 raising concerns the billionaire is stretched too thin. It closed Wednesday at $156.80 per share, with an overall valuation of less than $500 billion, sharply down from when Musk signaled his interest in Twitter over the spring, and Tesla was valued at over $1 trillion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Contributing to the losses, Musk sold around $3.5 billion worth of Tesla stock in recent days, according to a financial filing Wednesday night. That added to another more than $3.9 billion in Tesla shares sold by Musk in early November, according to the filings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cWake up tesla [board] \u2014 what is the plan? Who is running tesla and when is Elon coming back?\u201d tweeted Ross Gerber, a Tesla investor who supported Musk\u2019s Twitter bid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">He added in a tweet late Wednesday that Tesla needed to buy back shares \u201cto take advantage [of] the low share price Elon has created,\u201d as investors anticipated a potential further blow to the company\u2019s value on Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Musk did not respond to a request for comment. Tesla and Twitter did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1602810411648065536?s=20&amp;t=m_E4JLnpda0HFcNd7i7-Ag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted in a reply<\/a> Tuesday that \u201cI will make sure Tesla shareholders benefit from Twitter long-term.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Musk\u2019s bid to buy Twitter has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/05\/20\/tesla-stock-price-plummeting\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial with Tesla investors<\/a> since he first announced it this spring. The billionaire holds much of his wealth in Tesla shares, and it was immediately apparent he would have to leverage his position there to afford his purchase of the social media company. Tesla\u2019s stock fell, but many investors remained cautiously optimistic, or at least neutral, about Musk\u2019s deal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Investors cite their belief in Musk, including what they perceive as his relentless work ethic and ability to extract the most out of his employees. Musk has touted sleeping on the floor of the Tesla factory during a critical period when the company was struggling with production.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Musk also brought that ethos to Twitter. Early on into his tenure, a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/esthercrawford\/status\/1587709705488830464?s=20&amp;t=Pi5vydPjF63psmZB-p7Qzg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photo showed<\/a> an employee using a sleeping bag on the office floor, along with a tweet using the hashtag \u201c#SleepWhereYouWork.\u201d Musk demanded that employees commit to an \u201cextremely hardcore\u201d Twitter or accept severance packages, effectively laying off those who did not agree to the new ethos.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In his brief time as owner and chief executive of the company, Musk has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/03\/elon-musk-twitter-layoffs\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gutted Twitter\u2019s workforce<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/12\/12\/musk-twitter-harass-yoel-roth\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disbanded an outside trust and safety council<\/a> designed to help keep the site safe for users, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/24\/twitter-musk-reverses-suspensions\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">welcomed previously banned accounts<\/a>, including that of former president Donald Trump, back onto the site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Since he took over in October, Musk has faced questions about how long Twitter will continue to impose such heavy demands on his time. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/16\/elon-musk-tesla-trial-pay\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has said<\/a> he will eventually reduce his time at Twitter and find someone else to run it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Tesla has acknowledged in financial filings that Musk is occupied with his various business ventures, citing it as a risk to the business.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cWe are highly dependent on the services of Elon Musk, Technoking of Tesla and our Chief Executive Officer,\u201d the company has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1318605\/000095017022000796\/tsla-20211231.htm#item_1_business\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cAlthough Mr. Musk spends significant time with Tesla and is highly active in our management, he does not devote his full time and attention to Tesla.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Already for some Tesla investors, it\u2019s adding up to be too much Twitter and not enough focus on Austin-based Tesla.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cWe\u2019re in literally the best part of the company\u2019s history and it\u2019s being totally demolished by Twitter,\u201d Gerber said in an interview. \u201cI think the stock would rally big-time if they just said \u2018Elon\u2019s not CEO of Tesla anymore.\u2019 Now I don\u2019t want that. What I want is him back in Austin.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<div data-oembed-type=\"twitter\" class=\"\" style=\"min-height:171px\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If the BOD of tesla made an announcement on what\u2019s happening with tesla leadership. It\u2019s that simple. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MartinViecha?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MartinViecha<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24tsla&amp;src=ctag&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$tsla<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ross Gerber (@GerberKawasaki) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GerberKawasaki\/status\/1602688949432221696?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 13, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Gary Black, managing partner of Tesla investor Future Fund LLC, called on the Tesla board to pressure Musk to find a leader for Twitter, so he can refocus his energies on the electric vehicle company.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cHe will realize soon (if not already) that his polarizing political views are hurting customer perceptions of [Tesla] EVs,\u201d he wrote in a tweet. \u201cCustomers don\u2019t want their cars to be controversial. They want to be proud as hell to drive them \u2014 not embarrassed.\u201d He expressed hope Musk could \u201cfocus on [Tesla] as CEO.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Tesla is facing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-13\/tesla-stock-has-never-been-this-cheap-could-still-drop-further\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demand slowdown in China<\/a> and rising costs of supplies to make the electric vehicles. Investors are concerned about Musk\u2019s split focus, said Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives.  They had also been wary he might continue to sell Tesla stock to fund Twitter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Not since Steve Jobs with Apple or Jack Welch with GE has there been a CEO whose name is so closely tied to  his company\u2019s brand, Ives said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cThe brand of Musk is so associated with Tesla,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd the Twitter circus show has been a black eye for Musk and therefore a black eye for Tesla.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Goldman Sachs lowered its price target for Tesla this week, often meaning analysts expect the stock to fall, even as it said the company \u201cremains well positioned for long-term growth.\u201d But deliveries are likely going to be lower than expected, analysts wrote. They called attention to media reports that Musk\u2019s actions have made the Tesla brand more polarizing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cWe believe that Tesla\u2019s brand has significant value related to the company\u2019s leadership position in clean energy and advanced technology,\u201d Goldman Sachs analysts wrote. \u201cHaving consumer focus related to Tesla shift back to these core attributes of sustainability and technology will be important in our view if Tesla is to meet or exceed long-term investor expectations for Tesla.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Twitter\u2019s and Tesla\u2019s futures are now tied to each other \u2014 not just through Musk\u2019s leadership, but also through his wealth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cThe more Tesla stock goes down, it ultimately puts more pressure on the ability to fund further Twitter losses,\u201d Ives said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Even some of Musk\u2019s fans seem to be questioning  him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Galileo Russell, a YouTuber who focuses on Tesla and has heaped praise on Musk, criticized Musk for wading into politics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201ci think <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\">@elonmusk<\/a> getting too political is a mistake,\u201d he wrote in a tweet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Musk replied: \u201cMust be done for the future of civilization, without which nothing matters.\u201d Another account then asked Musk  where that ranked on his list of priorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cNumber 1,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Fans piled on, writing in tweets: \u201cCan we make Tesla #1 and woke mind virus #2?\u201d and \u201cHope it\u2019s worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Tesla investor Russell said he\u2019s standing by Musk, despite his tweet on Musk\u2019s turn toward  politics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cI hold all my Tesla shares, and continue to believe Elon is the best CEO on the planet, and best person to run Tesla,\u201d he told The Washington Post. \u201cShort term shareholders are a loud minority and will be washed out.
