(Credit: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory)<\/small><\/center>After a day or two of public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.extremetech.com\/extreme\/341482-us-scientists-expected-to-announce-major-achievement-in-nuclear-fusion\">speculation<\/a>, representatives from the US Department of Energy announced Tuesday morning that scientists in Livermore, California have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.llnl.gov\/news\/national-ignition-facility-achieves-fusion-ignition\">successfully actualized a nuclear fusion reaction<\/a> resulting in a net energy gain. The achievement, which officials have called a \u201cmajor scientific breakthrough,\u201d is expected to bring the world one step closer to commercializing zero-carbon energy.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) National Ignition Facility reportedly pulled off the reaction on Monday, Dec. 5. Using a laser array the size of a sports stadium, LLNL mimicked the temperatures and pressures found within stars, where nuclear fusion occurs naturally. (Credit: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIgnition allows us to replicate for the first time certain conditions that are only found in the stars and sun,\u201d said US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm during Tuesday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Eke5PawU7rE\">announcement<\/a>. \u201cThis milestone moves us one significant step closer to the possibility of zero-carbon abundant fusion energy powering our society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Legislators and clean energy experts alike have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/doe-national-laboratory-makes-history-achieving-fusion-ignition\">joined<\/a> the Department of Energy in celebrating what\u2019s likely a major step toward a \u201ccleaner\u201d energy grid. But despite everyone\u2019s (well-founded) excitement, it\u2019ll be quite some time before fusion reactions like this one will power everyday infrastructure. LLNL director Kim Budil emphasized that there are still \u201csignificant hurdles\u201d to overcome in regards to nuclear fusion technology before it can be used on a large scale\u2014or any scale, for that matter. Though LLNL\u2019s achievement is significant, it will take continued experimentation and learning to build upon this \u201cengineering marvel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LLNL <a href=\"https:\/\/www.llnl.gov\/news\/national-ignition-facility-achieves-fusion-ignition\">says<\/a> its ignition success will directly support NNSA\u2019s Stockpile Stewardship Program, which focuses on the safety and reliability of the United States\u2019 nuclear equipment.
