Slow application performance is frustrating, with poor interaction with the database being a primary contributor. Therefore, slower response times trigger lower worker productivity or fewere eyeballs on a website as users get impatient, diminishing overall company revenue.<\/p>\n

Through a data access layer in the form of a proxy, Heimdall Data Inc. has partnered with Amazon Web Services Inc. to take this pain point away by enhancing the interaction and visibility of an application and current database, which boosts database security and scale in a timely manner, according to Roland Lee<\/a> (pictured, left), co-founder and chief executive officer of Heimdall Data.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn typical events like Black Friday, where there\u2019s a surge in traffic\u00a0that can overwhelm the database, the Heimdall data access layer Database Proxy\u00a0provides an auto scaling distributed architecture\u00a0such that it can absorb those surges in traffic\u00a0and help scale the database while keeping\u00a0the data fresh and up to date,\u201d Lee said. \u201cSo, basically, traffic based on season, time of day,\u00a0we can adjust automatically.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lee and Hawn Nguyen-Loughren<\/a> (pictured, right), head of enterprise solutions architecture at Amazon Web Services Inc., spoke with theCUBE industry analyst John Walls<\/a> at the AWS re:Invent 2022 Global Startup Program<\/a>, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio. They discussed the Heimdall Data and AWS collaboration and why slow application performance should be a thing of the past. (* Disclosure below.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Getting the most out of managed database service<\/h3>\n

The partnership between Heimdall Data and AWS plays an instrumental role in improving the experience of managing a database without any application changes, according to Lee, who said that Heimdall Proxy offers much-needed intelligence.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe AWS partnership has been absolutely wonderful,\u201d he noted. \u201cWhat the Heimdall Data does is it complements\u00a0Amazon RDS, Amazon Redshift very well in the sense that\u00a0we\u2019re not replacing the database.\u00a0What we\u2019re doing is we are allowing the customer\u00a0to get the most out of the managed database service, whether it is Redshift, Aurora Serverless, or RDS,\u00a0all without code changes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Databases ought to have proxies for enhanced performance and productivity, according to Lee, who said that the Heimdall Proxy is efficient because it can be readily used.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom large companies that do build\u00a0some type of data access layer or proxy and\u00a0or sometimes utilize some ORM,\u00a0some object-relational mapper to do it \u2026 what we\u2019re trying to do is offer this,\u00a0put this out to the market commercially speaking,\u201d Lee stated. \u201cFor Heimdall Data, it\u2019s all about\u00a0improving database performance and scale\u00a0and those workloads change.\u00a0We have OLTP we have OLAP with\u00a0artificial intelligence\/ML.\u201d<\/p>\n

The collaboration between Heimdall Data and AWS can be deemed as a better-together story, according to Nguyen-Loughren, who said that the Heimdall Proxy is a perfect fit for spurring innovation.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo Heimdall as an independent service vendor, most customers can leverage that through a marketplace\u00a0where it basically integrates very nicely with AWS. So it gives them that lift,\u201d she stated. \u201cAnd it goes back to the undifferentiated heavy lifting\u00a0on the Heimdall Proxy side. I\u2019ve seen these cases where customers\u00a0have some legacy system that they may not\u00a0have time to modernize the application, so they use this as a lift to keep going\u00a0as they try to modernize.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why build when you can buy?<\/h3>\n

Heimdall Proxy offers a seamless interaction between the application and database. Therefore, it takes away the hassle of building an interface from scratch, according to Lee.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need some type of interface between the application\u00a0and the database, and we provide that \u2026 sort of, why build when you can buy,\u201d he said. \u201cLarge companies like Amazon.com, Google, they have huge teams that can build\u00a0data access layers and proxies.\u00a0And what we\u2019re trying to do here is commercialize this, because those are built in house and it\u2019s not\u00a0readily available for customers to use.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tsunami of data is illustrating that data has become king, Nguyen-Loughren pointed out. As a result, the cloud has come in handy in application modernization.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the explosion of data, we see customers trying to modernize their application, as well, through microservices,\u201d she explained. \u201cSo, with the scalability and agility of the cloud, we\u2019re able to adapt to the\u00a0rapid changes and ingestions of the data.\u00a0So, that\u2019s why we have things like Aurora Serverless \u2014 to have that auto scale.\u00a0So they can do mySQL performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since product innovation is at the heart of enterprises, Nguyen-Loughren believes the AWS-Heimdall partnership plays an instrumental role in providing undifferentiated heavy lifting. As a result, optimal efficiency becomes a reality.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say that a lot of customers are wanting\u00a0to focus more on product innovation, experimentation,\u201d she pointed out.\u00a0\u201cSo with AWS, we provide undifferentiated heavy lifting\u00a0so that they can focus on product innovation.\u00a0Talking about Heimdall \u2026 from the database side we do provide\u00a0Amazon RDS, which is a relational database, and also Aurora to give them that lift.\u00a0So they don\u2019t have to worry about patching servers\u00a0and setting up provisioning servers as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
