Apple unveiled GymKit in 2017 which allows users to connect an Apple Watch<\/a> to gym equipment directly for better metrics on both sides. After a strong debut, it’s faded into near-obscurity. <\/p>\n

“We’re enabling – for the first time – two-way data exchange in real-time with gym equipment,” said Kevin Lynch, vice president of Technology at Apple, during WWDC<\/a> 2017. “Now all the information matches, it’s much easier, and it’s a lot more accurate.” <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The feature is still around, but it’s been pulled back from devices and overtaken by third-party apps. Here’s what GymKit<\/a> is, who supports it, and where it currently is now. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What is GymKit<\/h2>\n

GymKit allows you to be able to use your Apple Watch to pair and sync data with compatible workout equipment. This can range from treadmills, ellipticals, and indoor bikes. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It offers a way to get more accurate metrics shown on the equipment’s screen and record more accurate data on your Apple Watch. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

You’ll see a little NFC symbol on the equipment, and it will either say “Connects to Apple Watch” or “Connect to Apple Watch”, to know that it offers GymKit support. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

  1. Before pairing, make sure your watch is set to detect gym equipment<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  2. Go into Settings<\/strong> on your Apple Watch<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  3. Scroll down until you see Workout<\/strong> at the bottom of the list. Tap on it.<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  4. Scroll down until you see Detect Gym Equipment<\/strong> and toggle it ON<\/strong><\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  5. Once it is turned on, hold your Apple Watch’s screen towards the reader<\/strong> on the workout equipment<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  6. You will hear a beep and feel a tap<\/strong> to know it was a successful pairing between the two<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n

    Pairing your Apple Watch with workout equipment is similar to using your watch to use Apple Pay. To start and end a workout, just press Start and Stop on the gym equipment and your Apple Watch will follow. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    If Detect Gym Equipment is turned off, then open the Workout app on your Apple Watch and perform the same steps as if it was turned on. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    GymKit-compatible equipment<\/h2>\n

    Equipment that is compatible and offers GymKit support is limited, and purchasing equipment that offers it as well will not be cheap. Here are the providers that offer equipment with GymKit built in. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
