The app shows a color \u2013 green, yellow or red \u2013 depending on a user&#8217;s assessed risk. It determined the user&#8217;s risk by tracking phone signals and location information. Local apps are still used in many cities. According to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsonweibo.com\/goodbye-health-code-chinese-netizens-say-farewell-to-the-green-horse\/\" rel=\"noopener\">What&#8217;s on Weibo<\/a>, a site that monitors Chinese social media, at least 31 different regional apps exist.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless more than a few people are glad to see the end of the app, and the end of obsessing about retaining green status. A ten point announcement <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news.cn\/politics\/2022-12\/07\/c_1129189131.htm\">issued<\/a> by the National Health Commission last Wednesday laid out new, more chilled-out COVID strategy.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to confining the requirement to show the app to spaces deemed vulnerable \u2013 like elderly care facilities, schools and infant care \u2013 the directive reduced lockdowns to floors of a building rather than whole structure or neighborhood. COVID positive individuals will be advised to self isolate at home, and businesses will not be required to shut down.<\/p>\n<p>The changes follow highly unusual <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/11\/26\/china-xinjiang-fire-urumqi-covid-zero\/\" rel=\"noopener\">protests<\/a> sparked by a building fire in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, where at least ten people died. Authorities have denied allegations that anti-COVID measures contributed to victims&#8217; inability to escape the fire.<\/p>\n<p>Citizens took to the streets venting their frustrations and holding white sheets of paper that symbolised their inability to voice their protests in China&#8217;s highly-monitored and censored social and mainstream media.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After police told people not to chant \u201cno more lockdowns\u201d they began chanting \u201cmore lockdowns\u201d and \u201cI want to do COVID tests\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/R8Y29TRFwa\">pic.twitter.com\/R8Y29TRFwa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Vivian Wang (@vwang3) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vwang3\/status\/1596861432624480256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 27, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beijing&#8217;s decision has spread to Hong Kong, where chief executive Li Jiachao <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/weibo.com\/7354234663\/MjmZ8atxN?refer_flag=1001030103_\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> on Weibo that from Wednesday onward, residents of the Territory would also be relieved of their COVID tracking platform.<\/p>\n<p>Most countries have abandoned or reduced their COVID tracking apps, as it turned out the technology regularly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/04\/15\/contact_tracing_apps_assessed\/\" rel=\"noopener\">overpromised and underdelivered.<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Australia scrapped its app in August after it was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-australia-62496322\" rel=\"noopener\">deemed<\/a> a massive failure. Japan pulled the plug on its version in September.
