Joseph Kittinger Jr., who for more than half a century held a world record for a parachute jump from the edge of space, died in Florida on Friday at age 94.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalmuseum.af.mil\/Visit\/Museum-Exhibits\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/195681\/excelsior-gondola\/\">record-setting jump<\/a> in 1960, he stepped out of a gondola 102,800 feet (almost 20 miles) high, an elevation that put him outside more than 99 percent of Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Then-Capt. Kittinger free-fell for four minutes 37 seconds, reaching speeds over 600 mph.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The jump was part of early space-age exploration, occurring before humans had landed on the moon and when it was unclear whether a person could survive a jump from the edge of space.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Col. Kittinger died of lung cancer, according to a friend, former U.S. representative John L. Mica, the Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/obituaries\/joseph-kittinger-who-set-longtime-parachute-record-dies\/2022\/12\/09\/25cbcf04-781f-11ed-a199-927b334b939f_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_8\">reported<\/a>. Kittinger passed away today &#8211; Friday, December 9, 2022, at 94. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xQCYKqUXdx\">pic.twitter.com\/xQCYKqUXdx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ExplorersClub (@ExplorersClub) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ExplorersClub\/status\/1601347536333463552?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 9, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">USPA said in a statement late Friday that it was \u201csaddened\u201d by his death, noting that he became a prominent national figure when \u201che made a long, lonely leap from a hot-air balloon 102,800 feet above the Earth,\u201d on Aug. 16, 1960, as a U.S. Air Force captain involved in Project Excelsior.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">As part of the project, he completed three jumps over 10 months from a pressurized gondola hoisted into the stratosphere by large helium balloons \u2014 his first attempt was almost fatal, but he was undeterred. The project sought to test whether humans could survive extremely high-altitude bailouts and to design ejection systems for military pilots.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/12\/09\/dear-moon-spacex-mission-crew-steve-aoki\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_13\">Steve Aoki, K-pop star T.O.P to fly around moon with Japanese billionaire<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In his final record-breaking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centennialofflight.net\/essay\/Dictionary\/kittinger\/DI29.htm\">jump, <\/a>he took off from the New Mexico desert wearing a cumbersome pressure suit \u2014 that would briefly malfunction \u2014 and rigged with gear that almost doubled his weight, then fell at record speeds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">It took him 1 hour 31 minutes to climb to his maximum altitude, even as he began experiencing severe pain in his right hand because of a failure in his pressure glove. He remained at peak altitude for around 12 minutes before stepping out of his gondola to free fall, then parachute down to a landing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cThere\u2019s no way you can visualize the speed,\u201d Col. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridatrend.com\/article\/1935\/icon-joseph-kittinger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kittinger told Florida Trend magazine in 2011<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing you can see to see how fast you\u2019re going. You have no depth perception. \u2026 There are no signposts. I could only hear myself breathing in the helmet,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In 1960, he was awarded the Harmon Trophy by President Dwight D. Eisenhower for outstanding accomplishments in aeronautics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">His record for the highest balloon ascent and the longest parachute free fall would stand for 52 years. It was broken in 2012, when Col. Kittinger worked as a consultant to the Austrian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/express\/wp\/2014\/04\/08\/the-air-and-space-museum-celebrates-felix-baumgartners-very-long-jump\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_20\">Felix Baumgartner<\/a>, who jumped from 128,000 feet, plummeting to Earth at speeds over <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/science-new-mexico-felix-baumgartner-6de58aab5b0e45de82b1f7e700d9d3c4\">800 mph.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Joseph Kittinger Jr. was born in Tampa in 1928 and became fascinated with planes at a very young age, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmspacemuseum.org\/inductee\/joseph-w-nkittinger\/?doing_wp_cron=1670666040.5394868850708007812500\">according <\/a>to the New Mexico Museum of Space History. He attended the University of Florida before applying for Air Force cadet training. He received his pilot wings in 1950.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">He retired as a colonel in 1978 after a decorated career with the Air Force, including serving three tours in Vietnam as a pilot, where he spent 11 months as a prisoner of war, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalaviation.org\/enshrinee\/jr-joseph-joe-william-kittinger\/\">according <\/a>to the National Aviation Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/29\/china-space-station-crew-launch\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_26\">China launches crew to recently completed space station<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">He continued his trailblazing as an adventurer, setting another record in 1983 for the longest distance flown in a 1,000 cubic meter helium balloon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In 1984, he became the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in a helium balloon, from Maine, to the Italian Riviera. A jubilant Col. Kittinger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/1984\/09\/19\/jubilant-balloonist-crash-lands-in-italy-after-crossing-atlantic\/7b19a033-cbe2-488b-be9f-6ddc370acf8e\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_28\">told <\/a>reporters at the time that the flight had been \u201cpure, unadulterated adventure.\u201d He added \u201cyou just have to go for it; that\u2019s the American way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Col. Kittinger wrote a book in 1961, \u201cThe Long, Lonely Leap,\u201d and remained active in aeronautics projects, especially ballooning, after his retirement.
