But what are the minimum specs to run Stable Diffusion, and what components matter the most?<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\">What PC Hardware Does Stable Diffusion Require?<\/h2>\n<p>The single most critical component for Stable Diffusion is your graphics card (GPU). Stable Diffusion \u2014 at least the primary version \u2014 runs almost exclusively on your GPU. That means that other system components, like your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/694869\/what-is-a-cpu-and-what-does-it-do\/\">CPU<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/697659\/what-is-ram-everything-you-need-to-know\/\">RAM<\/a>, and storage drives, don\u2019t matter nearly as much.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Community forks sometimes change how Stable Diffusion operates and may result in a greater demand on your CPU and RAM than the official Stable Diffusion release.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Generally speaking, here are the minimums specs we\u2019d recommend if you\u2019re building a new PC with Stable Diffusion in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>CPU<\/strong>: Any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/792121\/how-to-buy-a-new-cpu-for-your-motherboard\/\">modern AMD or Intel CPU<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>RAM<\/strong>: A minimum of 16 gigabytes of DDR4 or DDR5 RAM.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Storage<\/strong>: Any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/657972\/nvme-vs.-sata-which-ssd-technology-is-faster\/\">SATA or NVMe<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/775303\/best-internal-ssd\/\">solid-state drive<\/a> from a reputable company that is 256 gigabytes or larger. You need at least 10 gigabytes of free space available. We\u2019ve seen Stable Diffusion running on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/812201\/a-mac-base-m1-or-m2-chip-is-probably-all-you-need\/\">M1 and M2 Macs<\/a>, AMD cards, and old NVIDIA cards, but they tend to be difficult to get running and are more prone to problems.\u00a0RTX NVIDIA GPUs are the only GPUs natively supported by Stable Diffusion at the time this article was written in December 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/414201\/how-to-check-what-graphics-card-gpu-is-in-your-pc\/\"><strong><em>How to Check What Graphics Card (GPU) Is in Your PC<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Any of the following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=Nvidia+RTX&amp;tag=lsmedia-13388-20\">NVIDIA RTX cards<\/a> will work out of the box:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>RTX 2060 (12GB), RTX 2070, RTX 2070 Super, RTX 2080, RTX 2080 Super, RTX 2080 Ti, or RTX Titan<\/li>\n<li>RTX 3060, RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070, RTX 3070 Ti, RTX 3080, RTX 3080 (12GB), RTX 3080 Ti, RTX 3090, or RTX 3090 Ti<\/li>\n<li>RTX 4090, RTX 4080, and future 40-series GPUs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> The RTX 3050 would work too, but it is difficult to recommend given how it is priced compared to the RTX 3060 12 gigabyte variant.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Try to buy the newest GPU you can. Any of the 20, 30, or 40-series GPUs with 8 gigabytes of memory from NVIDIA will work, but older GPUs \u2014 even with the same amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/781787\/what-is-vram\/\">video RAM (VRAM)<\/a> \u2014 will take longer to produce the same size image. If you\u2019re building or upgrading a PC specifically with Stable Diffusion in mind, avoid the older RTX 20-series GPUs unless you find a fantastic deal on one, since they\u2019re significantly slower.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\">How Much Video Memory (GPU Memory) Do You Need?<\/h2>\n<p>The larger you make your images, the more VRAM Stable Diffusion will use.\u00a0The <strong>minimum<\/strong> amount of VRAM you should consider is 8 gigabytes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/830179\/how-to-run-stable-diffusion-on-your-pc-to-generate-ai-images\/\">The unmodified Stable Diffusion release<\/a> will produce 256\u00d7256 images using 8 GB of VRAM, but you will likely run into issues trying to produce 512\u00d7512 images.\u00a0If you want to go to 512\u00d7512 images without fiddling with the settings, get a GPU with 12 gigabytes of VRAM or more.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=RTX+3060&amp;tag=lsmedia-13388-20\">RTX 3060<\/a> is a potential option at a fairly low price point. The RTX 3060 is slower than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=3060+Ti&amp;tag=lsmedia-13388-20\">3060 Ti<\/a>, however, the RTX 3060 has 12 gigs of VRAM, whereas the 3080 Ti only has 8 gigs. It all depends on the size of the image you\u2019re generating.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are all sorts of optimized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/devops\/how-to-properly-fork-a-github-repository\/\">forks<\/a> that allow you to get away with much less VRAM at the expense of speed, but if you want to be sure it\u2019ll work, stick with RTX NVIDIA cards that have at least 8 gigabytes of memory.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\">Should You Use an Optimized Fork of Stable Diffusion?<\/h2>\n<p>In a word: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>The Stable Diffusion community has done a fantastic job expanding the number of supported GPUs to make Stable Diffusion more accessible.<\/p>\n<p>Community forks often include a user interface, additional models to refine your creations, and optimizations that allow you to generate larger images with less VRAM. Some users have been able to generate 512\u00d7512 images with as little as 4 gigabytes of VRAM using community forks. The same optimizations allow users with 8 and 12 gigabyte GPUs to produce significantly larger images.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/832491\/how-to-run-stable-diffusion-locally-with-a-gui-on-windows\/\">user interface is a great feature too, as it makes using Stable Diffusion<\/a>\u00a0easier.<\/p>\n<p>Just be careful. Most of the modifications you\u2019ll find are written by well-intentioned enthusiasts, but there is always the possibility that someone is acting maliciously. If your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/794451\/best-antivirus-software\/\">antivirus<\/a> flags a Stable Diffusion fork as malicious, don\u2019t ignore it.
