The insurance giant has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/11\/07\/medibank_breach_n0_ransom_payment\/\">refused to pay a ransom<\/a> to the extortionists.<\/p>\n<p>The health insurer first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/10\/13\/mediabank_private_latest_aussie_business\/\">admitted<\/a> it had been attacked on October 13. At the time it said it had taken down systems that run two sub-brands as a precaution, and that no customer data had been accessed at either those brands or Medibank itself.<\/p>\n<p>About a week later it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/10\/20\/medibank_data_breach_worsens\/\">revised<\/a> the earlier assessment and said extortionists had been in contact to negotiate a deal for the return of patient data.
