{"id":22031,"date":"2022-12-08T19:04:52","date_gmt":"2022-12-08T19:04:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/index.php\/2022\/12\/08\/europes-usb-c-deadline-set-for-december-2024-the-register\/"},"modified":"2022-12-08T19:04:52","modified_gmt":"2022-12-08T19:04:52","slug":"europes-usb-c-deadline-set-for-december-2024-the-register","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/index.php\/2022\/12\/08\/europes-usb-c-deadline-set-for-december-2024-the-register\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe&#8217;s USB-C deadline set for December 2024 \u2022 The Register"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/go.fiverr.com\/visit\/?bta=1052423&nci=17043\" Target=\"_Top\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/fiverr.ck-cdn.com\/tn\/serve\/?cid=40081059\" loading=\"lazy\"  width=\"601\" height=\"201\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"body\">\n<p>OEMs, start your assembly lines as the European Commission (EC) has published its USB-C rules, and an official date for enforcement has been set for December 28, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX:32022L2380&amp;pk_campaign=todays_OJ&amp;pk_source=EURLEX&amp;pk_medium=TW&amp;pk_keyword=Common%20charger&amp;pk_content=Directive\" rel=\"nofollow\">the law<\/a> comes into effect, any newly made radio equipment that can be charged with a wire, from smartphones and tablets to earbuds, mice and keyboards, will have to contain a USB-C port instead of an old micro USB port or one of Apple&#8217;s Lightning ports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The only exception to the law now on the books are laptops, which are being given until April 28, 2026, to comply with the rule. Beyond requiring manufacturers to simplify their cable landscape, the European Parliament said the standard would also eliminate confusing and variable fast-charging speeds, as all USB-C cables delivered with equipment would be required to offer 100 watts of power delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Apple is the largest smartphone manufacturer to have resisted the adoption of USB-C, at least in some of its devices \u2013 the current generation of iPads have all ditched Lightning for USB-C. When talk of a planned single-charging standard in the European Union was raised again in late 2021, Apple was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/09\/23\/eu_one_charger_plan\/\">predictably against<\/a> the move.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/personaltech&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y5I1VMf7eY9qQSf0EZBu4wAAAJQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/personaltech&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y5I1VMf7eY9qQSf0EZBu4wAAAJQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>At the time, Apple said it was concerned that a single charging standard would stifle innovation, thereby harming consumers. Fast-forward to this past October when the USB-C law was signed, and Apple changed its tune, saying that it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/10\/27\/apple_usbc\/\">intended to conform<\/a> with the EU&#8217;s USB-C requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Maltese MP Alex Agius Saliba said in June: &#8220;This is a rule which will apply to everyone. Now it&#8217;s [not just a] Memorandum of Understanding [anymore] and having all the leeway that [Apple] had during the past 10 years \u2013 basically to not abide by this MoU \u2013 which was abided by the majority of manufacturers. So yes, Apple has to abide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s argument that adopting USB-C would stifle innovation simply doesn&#8217;t hold much water, especially if Lightning ports are the alternative. Lightning can&#8217;t offer the data transfer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/investing\/lightning-vs-usb-c-is-the-switch-worth-it#:~:text=Lightning%20ports%20support%20USB%202.0,the%20copper%20pins%20are%20exposed.\" rel=\"nofollow\">speeds<\/a> that USB-C is capable of, it doesn&#8217;t support USB 3.1 gen 2, and it&#8217;s capped to just 14W of power delivery &#8211; all factors in USB-C&#8217;s favor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20220930IPR41928\/long-awaited-common-charger-for-mobile-devices-will-be-a-reality-in-2024\" rel=\"nofollow\">The vote<\/a> on the proposal &#8211; 602 in favor, 13 against and 8 abstentions \u2013 may have also motivated Apple to realize it would have to leave the EU&#8217;s single market before it got its way.<\/p>\n<p>With Apple&#8217;s typical release cycle of unveiling new iPhones in the fall, Apple will technically have a bit more time than December 2024 to get USB-C in its new devices.
