Many organizations have seen digital solutions transcend from an enabling, peripheral function to becoming central operationally.<\/p>\n

And, now, these solutions are driving breakthroughs across a wider range of industries, one of which is healthcare and pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot release medicine<\/span>\u00a0without the use of technology,\u201d said Wes Barnes<\/a> (pictured, right), senior director at Pfizer Digital Solutions.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cA\u00a0huge component of our research is computational chemistry.<\/span>\u00a0Manufacturing medicines now is a practice<\/span>\u00a0in using data, analytics and predictive machine learning<\/span>\u00a0capabilities to help us determine<\/span>\u00a0how best to apply the capabilities<\/span>\u00a0to deliver the outcomes that we need.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Barnes and Jon Harrison<\/a> (pictured, left)<\/span>, managing director at Accenture PLC, spoke with theCUBE industry analyst John Walls<\/a> at the <\/span>AWS Executive Summit at re:Invent<\/span><\/a>, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio. They discussed how digitization has become invaluable to Pfizer, as well as Accenture\u2019s part in laying out the accompanying strategies. <\/span>(* Disclosure below.)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Making the world a healthier place<\/h3>\n

Infusing the benefits of enterprise computing into life sciences to make a broader impact on patients worldwide has been one of the key motivators for Accenture in its partnership with Pfizer, according to Harrison. And in the past three years, Pfizer has taken up the onus of leadership in modernizing within the pharma space.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we talk a little bit<\/span>\u00a0about the role that we played together with Pfizer<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0AWS in their journey to the cloud,<\/span>\u00a0it\u2019s so motivating for me personally<\/span>\u00a0and for every single person<\/span>\u00a0on the team that we asked to spend nights and weekends<\/span>\u00a0migrating things to the cloud, creating new capabilities,<\/span>\u00a0knowing that at the end of the day, the work<\/span>\u00a0that they\u2019re doing is making the world a healthier place,\u201d Harrison said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pfizer\u2019s recent digitization push began in the pandemic\u2019s wake during 2021. The company had to build up its clinical systems to support the increasingly high work volumes, according to Barnes.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite 10 years<\/span>\u00a0of consolidating infrastructure<\/span>\u00a0and moving towards modern technology, last year, only 10%<\/span>\u00a0of Pfizer\u2019s infrastructure was in the native public cloud,\u201d he explained. \u201c<\/span>We were rolling things into our data center to build up<\/span>\u00a0the capacity to achieve what we needed to achieve.<\/span>\u00a0Moving to the public cloud became imperative<\/span>\u00a0to try to achieve the scale<\/span>\u00a0and the modern capabilities that we need.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
