But the streamer\u2019s massive following belies months of bubbling dissatisfaction with the platform on which he and other streamers made their names and fortunes. That resentment came to the fore Monday. In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitlonger.com\/show\/n_1ss6lub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a statement<\/a> posted to Twitter, Niknam blasted recent policy changes at Twitch and gestured at an ambitious plan to, in his words, \u201cmake the live-streaming world better.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201c[Twitch] was and is built off of our backs,\u201d Niknam told The Washington Post. (Twitch is owned by Amazon, whose founder, Jeff Bezos, owns The  Post.) \u201cThey take half of most creators\u2019 sub revenue while charging viewers increased rates just to donate to their favorite streamers, they play ads everywhere and give us terrible ad rates, and ask for exclusivity in return for nothing, all while giving us close to no job security.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Niknam, 31, says he wants to eventually launch his own live-streaming platform that would let content creators keep 95% of revenue while the company keeps 5%, and told The Post he has investors who believe in his vision. So far, though, the streamer has offered few details on how he will pull it off. Early responses to Niknam\u2019s announcement from peers and other social media users often expressed support and skepticism in the same breath.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Internet sleuths also raised pointed questions about the owners of a platform endorsed by Niknam in his statement. In Monday\u2019s statement, Niknam said he would be advising Kick.com, another streaming platform, in a non-ownership role. He linked users to his Kick account, which accrued 8,000  followers overnight.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2022\/09\/06\/sports-gambling-addiction\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_9\">As sports betting goes mainstream, addiction experts are on high alert<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Kick.com doesn\u2019t have details on its website about its founders or investors, raising some eyebrows among creators and onlookers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cI can say confidently that kick.com is a sham,\u201d wrote former Twitch director of creator development Marcus \u201cDJWheat\u201d Graham <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/djWHEAT\/status\/1600190841233866753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Twitter<\/a>, pointing to the website\u2019s lack of information about its investors. \u201cI can\u2019t sit idly by and watch nonsense be thrown out into the world as a beacon of hope for creators.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cThere are so many red flags present that it is embarrassing watching people who I respect give this platform an ounce of credibility,\u201d Graham added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In a message to The Post, Niknam confirmed a connection between Kick and Stake, the crypto gambling website Niknam uses on stream. He said that Eddie Craven, whom he described as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2022\/aug\/17\/high-stakes-the-cryptocurrency-casino-king-who-bought-the-most-expensive-house-in-victoria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an owner of Stake<\/a>, was an investor in Kick. He added that the people behind the site liked his ideas and his Twitch following, so he was able to join as an adviser.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Kick confirmed the news in an email, writing that Craven \u201cis involved in Kick,\u201d though Stake itself is not an investor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cNo comment \u2026 but a hundred more questions,\u201d Graham said, when told Niknam had confirmed Stake and Kick were connected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2022\/09\/21\/twitch-gambling-ban-pokimane-mizkif-xqc\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_18\">Twitch cracks down on gambling, but streamers aren\u2019t sure it\u2019s enough<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Popular influencers on Twitch have bemoaned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/01\/26\/tech\/video-game-streaming-wars\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state of the platform for years<\/a>, from what they perceive as different standards of treatment toward top creators, to seemingly arbitrary enforcement of guidelines. The site recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2022\/10\/12\/amazon-twitch-streamer-70-30-pay\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">did away with a 70-30 revenue split<\/a> it had offered some top creators, and to which smaller streamers had aspired. In September, Twitch banned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2022\/09\/21\/twitch-gambling-ban-pokimane-mizkif-xqc\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some gambling, but not all gambling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Twitch\u2019s policy change around gambling specifies that it would disallow \u201cstreaming of gambling sites that include slots, roulette or dice games that aren\u2019t licensed either in the U.S. or other jurisdictions.\u201d The ban includes sites like Stake.com, Rollbit.com and Duelbits.com, while continuing to allow sports betting, poker and fantasy sports.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cI may stay on Twitch to game here and there, but I\u2019m a little irritated at their double standard of banning certain gambling sites they don\u2019t make money from,\u201d Niknam told The Post. Twitch declined to comment, saying it did not comment on individuals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Niknam is the eighth top streamer on Twitch this year based on hours watched, according to the streaming analytics company StreamElements. The streamer has gambled with the rapper Drake on Twitch before. His live streams often include disclaimers warning viewers to be careful while gambling, and that participants should expect losses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Today, the remaining gambling categories on Twitch collectively perform as well as some popular games like \u201cCall of Duty: Modern Warfare II\u201d and \u201cFortnite,\u201d according to data compiled by Devin Nash, co-founder at creator talent agency Novo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cI do think Twitch took a bite out of [gambling], but it is alive and well and super popular on Twitch still, and still causing all the problems people think it was before,\u201d Nash said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Niknam said that in the future, if he is allowed to design the terms of service for his platform, he would want a consistent policy across the board and restrictions against predatory gambling. Kick.com is also unlikely to be his final destination, he said; he hopes to launch his own platform in six months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cI have a team, and my eyes are on multiple platforms. If all work well, I plan on combining [them] into one \u2018super platform,\u2019 \u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s about all I can say about that for now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">For now, Kick.com\u2019s community guidelines confusingly say they don\u2019t allow gambling \u201cwith other users.\u201d Niknam said the site hasn\u2019t been updated with the real terms of service yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2022\/11\/10\/anthony-padilla-youtube-interview-smosh\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_34\">We spent a day with Anthony Padilla, YouTube\u2019s interview king<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">For Niknam, the new platform is also a way to resist Twitch\u2019s 50-50 revenue split for creators. The platform also promises that 100% of donations to creators will go to creators.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Some streamers expressed doubt about the incredibly thin profit margins this would result in for the platform.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cNot gonna lie, a lot of this seems so good, it\u2019s unsustainable,\u201d tweeted Ben \u201cCohh Carnage\u201d Cassell, a streamer with 1.5 million Twitch followers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cFull transparency in who and what companies are supporting it in the back end will also be important,\u201d Cassell told The Post. \u201cHowever, the more competition in the streaming realm, the better. We\u2019ll have to see how it works out long-term with their revenue model, content delivery systems and supporters.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cHeard about it. Interested to see what it is,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2022\/09\/27\/ludwig-youtube-twitch-offbrand-agency-xqc\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ludwig Ahgren<\/a>, a content creator with over 3 million subscribers on YouTube and followers on Twitch, when asked about Niknam\u2019s upcoming platform.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Despite the criticisms leveled at Twitch, the platform is still the king of live-streaming, pulling in 1.79 billion hours watched in October, compared to YouTube Gaming\u2019s 272 million and Facebook Gaming\u2019s 342 million. Starting a new competitor to Twitch will not be easy, as demonstrated by the death of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2020\/06\/30\/last-days-mixer\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_43\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft\u2019s Mixer<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cThe good news is the industry can sustain multiple streaming platforms since there is a tremendous audience for live gaming content, but getting to that level is a lot of work based on the graveyard of failed attempts,\u201d said Gil Hirsch, CEO and co-founder of creator tools and sponsorships platform StreamElements. \u201cRevenue shares can favor creators more than the company who provide the platform, but only as long as the company has other revenue models to offset those payouts. It will be interesting to see what solutions he has.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Hirsch said that Twitch\u2019s features and presentation are a good blueprint for other start-ups, but new market entrants need to figure out how to scale up and get low latency to a community of viewers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cCompetition is always good, hard to say whether this is possible or not with transaction processing fees, so I\u2019m really curious to see what happens,\u201d said Zack, better known as Asmongold, a streamer based in Austin   with over a million followers. He declined to provide his last name, citing privacy reasons. Asmongold wouldn\u2019t say if he would consider trying out Niknam\u2019s new platform or stick to Twitch, saying \u201cit depends on what\u2019s happened at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2022\/10\/21\/g4-shutdown-froskurinn-comcast-twitch\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_49\">Constant pivots, high costs and controversy: Why G4 failed<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Niknam has told streamers they don\u2019t have to sign exclusive deals with Kick and can continue to stream on Twitch at the same time. (Niknam plans to do the same). He admits that if he left Twitch to stream on other platforms, he might lose some of the large viewership he\u2019s been pulling in for the past year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cThere is a possibility of a temporary decrease until I more regularly stream, but once I do, I truly believe I\u2019ll retain my size or even grow larger,\u201d Niknam said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">As for the content, Niknam plans to continue streaming gambling to his audience on platforms like Kick.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cI\u2019ve been gambling since I was 18 or so, and before that if you count these video games that have microtransactions and luck-based box openings,\u201d he said. \u201cI just love the chance of the unobtainable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Niknam said he does not have a contract with Stake. Stake did not return a request for comment. Its CEO directed The Post to a general email address for press, from which the company did not respond.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In the past, Niknam has been accused of moving to Canada to evade taxes and for a way to use Stake legally. (Stake is unavailable in the U.S.) He has denied these claims.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In June of 2021, F\u00e9lix \u201cxQc\u201d Lengyel, who has 11.4 million followers, accidentally showed his direct messages with Niknam for a split second. Fans took a screenshot of the messages, where Niknam was advising Lengyel on working with gambling sites, adding \u201cThat\u2019s why Canada needs to happen asap.\u201d Lengyel did not return a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Niknam said he now \u201cfrequents\u201d three cities: Scottsdale, Ariz.;  Austin;  and Vancouver, Canada. He said he pays his taxes, though he declined to share financial documents.
