Organizations in sensitive industries, such as healthcare, have to ensure that their cloud transformations bring dividends in two areas: the financial side and saving lives.<\/p>\n

Pharmaceutical company Merck & Co Inc. has seen its move to the cloud happen gradually at scale to ensure it fulfills both of the aforementioned areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we talk about moving things to the cloud,<\/span>\u00a0it\u2019s much more than just moving servers or things like that,\u201d said Ron Kim<\/a>\u00a0(pictured, right), chief technology officer and senior vide president at Merck<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s really contributing towards our business<\/span>\u00a0that saves and improves lives.\u00a0So for our work,\u00a0<\/span>the stakes are high, but we think the opportunity\u2019s great.\u00a0And seizing<\/span>\u00a0that opportunity is what we\u2019re doing now with<\/span>\u00a0our Blue Sky program and working with AWS<\/span>\u00a0and Accenture on it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kim, as well as\u00a0Fran Geatens<\/a>\u00a0(pictured, center), vice president of technology infrastructure, operations and experience at Merck, and Sean Finnerty<\/a> (pictured, left), associate vice president of cloud and infrastructure technology at Merck,\u00a0spoke with theCUBE industry analyst John Walls<\/a> at the <\/span>AWS Executive Summit at re:Invent<\/span><\/a>, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio. Starting small and scaling out<\/span><\/h3>\n

Merck\u2019s digital transformation journey is only two years old. But even though it\u2019s still in its fledgling stages, the company has doubled down on a strategy of gradually raising momentum, according to Kim.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe early parts of the the two-year journey so far,<\/span>\u00a0we\u2019re really starting small,<\/span>\u00a0primarily driven by a central team,\u201d he stated. \u201c<\/span>And we did that consciously to get momentum,<\/span>\u00a0build the foundation, and prove again we could move things<\/span>\u00a0to the cloud with success and start to scale.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another dimension of that strategy is working to ensure that company employees maintain a positive experience while interacting with workplace solutions and technologies. And the company does this by fomenting an ardent curiosity within teams.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe focus on experience \u2014<\/span>\u00a0that my team\u2019s accountable for \u2014 transcends our<\/span>\u00a0cloud journey,\u201d Geatens explained.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cWe have held for the last three years<\/span>\u00a0within my organization a priority that\u2019s focused<\/span>\u00a0on improving the experience that colleagues<\/span>\u00a0in our company have with workplace technology and services.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
