Adam Sandler is still mourning the loss of his friend<\/a> Chris Farley 22 years after his death. The actor and comedian<\/a> told PEOPLE that he hasn\u2019t fully recovered from Farley\u2019s death, which occurred during the production of their comedy duo act \u201cThe Fat Boys\u201d in 1997.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to have to give it some time,\u201d Sandler told PEOPLE about the tribute. \u201cWe were really close. He was my friend, and I loved him \u2013 he was amazing. We didn\u2019t know how much we loved him until he was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The crowd was electric as Sandler took the stage. \u201cIt was so emotional,\u201d he told People of taking on the role of DJ for his late friend. \u201cI saw [Chris] in every audience, and I wish he were here to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comedian opened up about how much Farley meant to him, who passed away in 1997 at age 33 from an overdose. \u201cHe was like my brother,\u201d Sandler said. \u201cWe lived together for years, we traveled together and we worked together many times.\u201d<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t have to be a celebrity to understand the struggle of trying to find closure when someone you love passes away. Adam Sandler and Chris Farley knew each other for more than two decades before the Saturday Night Live alum died from a drug overdose in 1997.<\/p>\n

Farley\u2019s death was hard on Sandler, who still frequently remembers his friend and collaborator onstage during his comedy shows.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to have to give it some time,\u201d Sandler told PEOPLE about the tribute. \u201cWe were really close.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sandler also said that his life \u201cchanged forever\u201d when Farley died at 33 in 1997 of a drug overdose.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was a big shock to me and we were friends,\u201d Sandler said.<\/p>\n

But the actor said he decided to move forward after the tragedy. \u201cYou can\u2019t change the past,\u201d Sandler explained, \u201cand you can\u2019t live with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comedian added: \u201cYou just have to keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam Sandler\u2019s life was changed forever when Farley died. \u201cIt\u2019s hard,\u201d he said. \u201cI think about him every day. I miss him every day. It\u2019s just something that kind of stays with you for the rest of your life. Even though he was only here for a short time \u2026 I feel like we were friends for years before that. So it hit me really hard when it happened and then over time, I realized what an impact he had on people, so it makes me happy to know that he did have an impact on people because they loved him so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam Sandler added: \u201cHe had this great energy where he could do anything \u2014 but also made everybody laugh at himself as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
