A pessimist might argue both department store chain JCPenney<\/a> and pop group Backstreet Boys\u2019 best days are behind them. That, in turn, may explain why the retailer enlisted the boy band\u2014along with E! Entertainment host Naz Perez and makeup artist Piper Nelson\u2014for its first-ever Live Holiday Spectacular.<\/p>\n

The event, which streamed on Facebook<\/a> for about 80 minutes on Dec. 1, has since generated 684,000 views. (Livestreaming was, of course, one of Adweek\u2019s retail predictions for 2022<\/a> (and 2021<\/a>), but whether it has yet lived up to the hype is debatable.)<\/p>\n

The Backstreet Boys, of course, used the channel to promote their new holiday album, \u201cA Very Backstreet Christmas.\u201d It debuted at No. 1<\/a> on Billboard\u2019s Holiday Albums chart in October after it was reportedly delayed for a year<\/a> in part because of supply chain issues\u2014which did indeed plague the retail industry in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In addition to performing two new songs from the album\u2014and premiering the music video for \u201cChristmas in New York\u201d\u2014viewers watched the Backstreet Boys play holiday editions of popular games, such as guessing Who\u2019s Most Likely To\u2026 (This revealed singer Nick Carter is\u2014spoiler alert\u2014 \u201cthe most likely to burn Christmas dinner.\u201d)<\/p>\n

The Boys also completed an obstacle course dressed as snowmen, learned dance moves from 10-year-old TikTok star Chace Castle and recreated \u201cthe hottest seasonal makeup tutorials\u201d on each other. <\/p>\n

They also participated in an audience Q&A, which unearthed insights such as the band\u2019s favorite holiday movies (Home Alone, Christmas Vacation, Christmas Story, Elf and It\u2019s a Wonderful Life) and how social media has changed the way they interact with their fans (instant feedback and letting fans into their personal lives\u2014and 51-year-old Kevin Richardson wishes his bandmates would put down their phones already and live more in the present).<\/p>\n

To encourage engagement, JCPenney offered \u201cdelightful gifts\u201d from an \u201con-air advent calendar\u201d in exchange for questions. The broadcast netted about 251,000 comments.<\/p>\n

The stream also included display ads encouraging viewers to buy the album on JCP.com.<\/p>\n

\u201cJCPenney\u2019s Live Holiday Spectacular promises festive family fun, new holiday music, unbeatable value \u2026 and above all\u2014moments of joy to bring America\u2019s families together,\u201d said JCPenney CMO John Aylward in a statement.<\/p>\n

The Backstreet Boys are no strangers to ad land. In addition to a recent partnership with Downy<\/a>\u2014a spokesperson said they offer \u201cthe perfect blend of nostalgia and mainstream relevancy\u201d for shoppers\u2014the band has also worked with Chex Mix<\/a> and was featured in Doritos\u2019 2019 Super Bowl spot<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, fellow \u201990s boy band *NSYNC has lent its talents to the likes of McDonald\u2019s<\/a> and Progressive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
