Located in the Elysium Planitia region, the plume could explain the area&#8217;s volcanic and seismic activity, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41550-022-01836-3\" rel=\"noopener\">research paper<\/a> published today in Nature Astronomy said.<\/p>\n<p>Although there is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/exhibitions\/exploring-the-planets\/online\/solar-system\/mars\/surface\/volcanoes\/\" rel=\"noopener\">plenty of evidence of volcanic activity<\/a> on the Martian surface, including the largest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons, most of this activity took place during <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/goddard\/2021\/nasa-confirms-thousands-of-massive-ancient-volcanic-eruptions-on-mars\" rel=\"noopener\">a 500-million-year period about 4 billion years ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But in 2015, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2015\/05\/28\/nasa_sending_giant_thermohammer_to_mars\/\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA set in place plans to build a probe<\/a> which could reveal more about geological activity on Earth&#8217;s proximal sidekick. In 2018, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2018\/11\/26\/nasa_insight_mars_lander_lands\/\" rel=\"noopener\">the resulting $810 million InSight lander touched down<\/a>, with an instrument called HP3, a thermal \u201cmole\u201d that \u201cwill hammer five meters into the Martian subsurface \u2026 to learn how much heat is coming from Mars&#8217; interior and reveal the planet&#8217;s thermal history.\u201d<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n        <noscript><br \/>\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_offbeat\/science&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2Y44ku95CO-AWh3xtoA8FwgAAAMs&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_offbeat\/science&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2Y44ku95CO-AWh3xtoA8FwgAAAMs&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n            <\/a><br \/>\n        <\/noscript>\n    <\/div>\n<p>Analyzing the resulting data, and combining it with other sources including gamma-ray spectrometer data from NASA\u2019s Mars Odyssey spacecraft, Adrien Broquet, postdoctoral research associate, and associate professor Jeffrey Andrews-Hanna found strong evidence for ongoing geological activity.<\/p>\n<p>They found Cerberus Fossae, where Insight touched down, sits over a mantle plume of hot material that is 95\u2013285 Kelvin warmer than its surroundings. The presence of an active plume drives local sustained geological activity, including the marsquakes detected by InSight, and is the cause of the slow opening of the crust beneath the Cerberus Fossae.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOngoing plume activity demonstrates that Mars is not only seismically and volcanically active today, but possesses a geodynamically active interior as well.
