Dashboard to Search Engine Journal, and digital marketing changes pretty quickly in a year.<\/p>\n<p>Google Data Studio changed how it handles <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/looker-studio\/answer\/9061420?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blended data<\/a>, then changed its name altogether (Hello, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-cloud-rebrands-data-studio-as-looker-studio\/467599\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Looker Studio<\/a>!).<\/p>\n<p>What hasn\u2019t changed is that we still can\u2019t add goals and targets to the Google Ads platform, so we still need separate dashboards to track pacing and progress.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_471573\" style=\"width: templates.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Grab The Templates<\/h3>\n<p>First, use this link to <a href=\"http:\/\/paidsearchmagic.com\/pacing-dashboard-looker-studio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">download your free templates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are two dashboard variations to choose from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conversions (for lead generation).<\/li>\n<li>Revenue (for ecommerce).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As explained above, you need both the Looker Studio and Google Sheets files for this pacing dashboard to work correctly.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Update Your Copy Of Google Sheets Pacing Template<\/h3>\n<p>This is where you\u2019ll enter important information like your account name and targets.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click \u201cMake a copy\u201d of the Google Sheets Pacing Template.<\/li>\n<li>Change the name of the Google Sheet to reflect your account(s).<\/li>\n<li>In Column A, enter the name of your Google Ads account. The target is automatically populated based on goals and does not need to be set separately.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll see a different section depending on whether you\u2019re using the Revenue or Conversion Dashboard.<\/p>\n<p>The Revenue Dashboard for ecommerce displays <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/calculate-roas\/380373\/\">ROAS<\/a> (return on ad spend). That\u2019s because of <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/google-ads\/answer\/9347141?hl=en#:~:text=Conversion%20lag%20refers%20to%20the,the%20most%20updated%20conversion%20numbers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conversion lag time<\/a>, and I\u2019m going to note it but not worry about the fact that yesterday\u2019s revenue is only a third of the daily goal. Do not skip this section, or your targets won\u2019t match your actual goals.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Update Chart Pacing Targets<\/h3>\n<p>To get chart ranges to match your targets, you\u2019ll need to do some light customization. You can also set up a single Google Sheet as a data source for all your reports.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 4: Use Your Dashboard To Make Decisions<\/h2>\n<p>I don\u2019t like the phrase \u201clet the data decide\u201d because data doesn\u2019t make decisions. Lower bids and budgets, and pause or remove poor performers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cold Spend\/High Returns: Investigate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When the spend is low, but the return is above the goal, the temptation is to celebrate. Before you do, take a deeper look into how to use the available budget for top-of-funnel efforts or greater returns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cold\/Low: Adjust Expectations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the demand just isn\u2019t there, it might be best to adjust the budget, shifting allocated funds to a period that needs it.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 5: Troubleshooting And Maintenance<\/h2>\n<p>If something isn\u2019t working in your dashboard, start by checking these areas:<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cNull\u201d Or \u201cNo Data\u201d Errors<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Is the blended data \u201cjoin key\u201d in Looker Studio exactly the same in both your Sheets and Google Ads data sources? Check the name of the account in the top left corner of the dashboard and make sure there are no typos in the cell AI of your Google Sheet.<\/li>\n<li>Are you using the correct data source? Note that this template works directly with the Google Ads platform, not Google Analytics data about Google Ads campaigns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Pacing Or Accuracy Errors<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Is the date range set to custom (month to date, etc.)? It should be on custom, not auto.<\/li>\n<li>Have you correctly hardcoded the axis and pacing fields with your targets? Review Step 3 above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember that because the pacing template requires some hard coding for visualizations, you\u2019ll need to edit your targets in the dashboard to stay current when your goals change.<\/p>\n<h2>The Use Case For The Google Ads Pacing Dashboard<\/h2>\n<p>As paid search managers, sometimes we don\u2019t have all the tools we need to do our job. As you can see, this list directly informed the template I ultimately built:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>KPI snapshots and relationships.<\/strong> I need to understand the relationship between what should happen (goals and month-to-date targets) and what is happening (actuals).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Show daily progress.<\/strong> I want to see the daily pacing targets needed to reach monthly KPIs and whether the account is consistently hitting those targets. What course correction, if any, has happened? What changes still need to be made?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide context.<\/strong> I want to see how this month\u2019s performance compares to recent and longer-term trends.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Automated<\/strong>. Unless my budget or revenue goals change mid-month, I shouldn\u2019t have to touch or update anything.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Accessible and shareable<\/strong>.
