And given that email is used to store way too many documents, the risk of leaks is very significant.<\/p>\n<p>The status page has at least been updated regularly. While it assures that Rackspace has restored &#8220;thousands of customers,&#8221; it&#8217;s unclear whether those thousands represent the bulk of affected users or a tiny minority. And for the rest, the news remains grim.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y42EQ7umdSG-fk-fcMOYFAAAAFY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y42EQ7umdSG-fk-fcMOYFAAAAFY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>When the hosted Exchange service became unavailable, Rackspace quickly advised of \u2013 and offered free access to \u2013 Microsoft 365 as the fastest way to restore service, and offered do-it-yourself instructions on how to make the move.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Rackspace&#8217;s advice that the migration procedure should take between 30 and 60 minutes, some users found that option was not simple to implement. <i>The Register<\/i> has conversed with customers who profess to having little technical expertise \u2013 which is fair enough given Rackspace <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rackspace.com\/en-au\/email-hosting\/microsoft-exchange\" rel=\"noopener\">promotes<\/a> its hosted Exchange service as suitable for &#8220;any business size or need&#8221; and that an &#8220;award-winning team of support experts is available to solve your technical problems 24x7x365.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Non-technical users, however, found it hard to implement the instructions. Worse, customers of all sizes have also found the promise of swift support is not currently being fulfilled.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Y42EQ7umdSG-fk-fcMOYFAAAAFY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Y42EQ7umdSG-fk-fcMOYFAAAAFY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>Rackspace&#8217;s recent updates state that it has thrown 1,000 of its staff into support duties in an attempt to address &#8220;much longer than usual&#8221; wait times. But <i>Reg<\/i> readers have sent accounts of being left on hold for four hours.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This Rackspace nightmare just won&#8217;t end!&#8221; one wrote. &#8220;Unreal! No end in sight!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many versions of the following tweet are easy to find.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-partner=\"tweetdeck\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Unbelievable <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Rackspace?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@rackspace<\/a>. After 5 hours on hold, call was answered, we gave info politely, agent said to hold on a moment, and we were disconnected. Poof. No help, wasted time.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jessica Jonap (@JessicaJonap) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JessicaJonap\/status\/1599610178017447937?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 5, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rackspace claims it is in the process of contacting all affected customers by telephone. It has also acknowledged migration to Microsoft 365 is not the answer for all.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have heard and understand that self-migration may not be simple and can be challenging to implement,&#8221; the status update admits.<\/p>\n<p>The company has therefore introduced a kludge that will route email destined for its downed Exchange servers to an alternate external email address.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s no self-service option to get that done. Users must instead log a ticket with Rackspace to request the workaround, then respond with a list of users for whom they wish forwarding to be applied.<\/p>\n<p>Rackspace has not advised of turnaround times for such requests, and migration to Microsoft 365 remains the provider&#8217;s preferred option.<\/p>\n<p>Just what caused the mess remains a mystery.<\/p>\n<p>Rackspace has advised customers that &#8220;In order to best protect the environment, this will continue to be an extended outage of Hosted Exchange.&#8221; <i>The Register<\/i> fancies that suggests whatever caused the incident could do more damage if the service were restored without careful triage \u2013 meaning there&#8217;s malware somewhere and it could spread.<\/p>\n<p>And at the time of writing, it is two days and twenty hours since Rackspace first noted an incident. Speculation is filling the information vacuum, with theories pondering whether Rackspace&#8217;s Exchange implementation has been patched to cope with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/09\/30\/exchange_server_zero_day\/\" rel=\"noopener\">recently revealed exploits<\/a> of the messaging server, or the many other flaws that can flatten Exchange.
