Per Musk, there&#8217;s a new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/read-musks-midnight-email-telling-twitter-staff-work-long-hours-2022-11\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;extremely hardcore&#8221;<\/a> vision, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/elon-musk-twitter-designers-work-will-be-dense-and-intense-2022-11\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;dense and intense&#8221;<\/a> office structure, and an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/elon-musk-email-ends-remote-work-twitter-staff-office-2022-11\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;arduous&#8221; road<\/a> ahead \u2014 and employees need to be on board or leave the building.<\/p>\n<p data-pos=\"4\">Although other tech CEOs have not issued edicts as aggressive as Musk&#8217;s, this year&#8217;s economic downturn prompted leaders across the tech industry to tell workers they&#8217;ll need to work harder, albeit couched in more diplomatic language.<\/p>\n<p>If their language wasn&#8217;t as belligerent as Elon&#8217;s, the message was still similar: people would be expected to step up or find somewhere else to work.<\/p>\n<h2>At Meta, &#8216;there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn&#8217;t be her&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p data-pos=\"7\">Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told staff in early July that he would dial up the intensity of employee performance goals.<\/p>\n<p data-p-pos=\"18_5\">&#8220;Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn&#8217;t be here,&#8221; Zuckerberg <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/mark-zuckerberg-upping-goals-thin-out-meta-staff-2022-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reportedly said<\/a>. &#8220;And part of my hope by raising expectations and having more aggressive goals, and just kind of turning up the heat a little bit, is that I think some of you might just say that this place isn&#8217;t for you. And that self-selection is okay with me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Later that month during the Q2 earnings call, Zuckerberg doubled down on that vision and shared that the company planned to &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/meta-downsizing-workers-month-find-new-internal-job-before-layoffs-2022-9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">steadily reduce headcount growth over the next year,&#8221;<\/a> and that &#8220;many teams are going to shrink so we can shift energy to other areas inside the company.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-pos=\"10\">In October, Meta told managers to mark 15% of its employees as &#8220;needs support&#8221; in what workers dubbed &#8220;quiet layoffs,&#8221; Insider <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-quiet-layoffs-will-impact-thousands-of-jobs-employees-say-2022-10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously reported<\/a>. Across tech, more companies are now <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/big-tech-using-quiet-layoffs-helping-companies-and-hurting-workers-2022-10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">demanding a specific number<\/a> of workers be put on performance improvement plans and ultimately managed out of the company.<\/p>\n<h2>Alphabet needs to &#8216;make the company 20% more productive&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p data-pos=\"12\">In the summer, Sundar Pichai <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/google-productivity-sundar-pichai-improved-ceo-2022-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sounded the alarm<\/a> that employee productivity needed to improve. Weeks later, Pichai told Kara Swisher at the Code Conference in Los Angeles that he wanted the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/07\/google-ceo-says-he-hopes-to-make-company-20percent-more-efficient-hints-at-potential-cuts.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">company to be 20% more productive<\/a> and it was &#8220;slower&#8221; because of increased headcount.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Across everything we do, we can be slower to make decisions. You look at it end-to-end and figure out how to make the company 20% more productive,&#8221; Pichai said. &#8220;Sometimes there are areas to make progress [where] you have three people making decisions, understanding that and bringing it down to two or one improves efficiency by 20%.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The search engine giant also changed its employee performance rating system this year, telling managers they were now expected to mark 6% of its employees \u2014 more than 10,000 people \u2014 in the lowest performance tiers, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/google-layoffs-performance-rating-jobs-2022-11\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Insider previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-pos=\"15\">Some managers at Google were also told to conduct a certain number of &#8220;support check-ins&#8221; with their workers, which is a meeting that managers must hold before putting employees on the lowest-scoring performance bracket, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/google-layoffs-staff-worry-after-big-job-cuts-amazon-meta-2022-11\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to internal material viewed by Insider<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Amazon asked to &#8216;accomplish more with less&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Already <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/amazon-employees-use-frupidity-mix-frugality-stupidy-2022-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">famously frugal<\/a>, Amazon urged the company during an all-hands meeting in early October to &#8220;double down on frugality&#8221; and told employees to &#8220;accomplish more with less,&#8221; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/leaked-amazon-slides-instruct-employees-to-double-down-frugality-2022-10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to leaked slides from the meeting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-pos=\"18\">The e-commerce giant in November <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/amazon-layoffs-10000-employees-grand-challenge-team-dramatic-changes-2022-11\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">significantly downsized<\/a> its innovation lab Amazon Grand Challenge.
