Some of the victims of the Methbot fraud ring include The New York Times, The New York Post, Comcast, and Nestle.<\/p>\n<p>In late 2021, Aleksandr Zhukov was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay over $3.8 million in restitution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Uber: $100 million wasted in ad spend\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>In another high-profile case, transportation giant Uber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/augustinefou\/2021\/01\/17\/ubers-lawsuit-against-ad-fraud-comes-full-circlethey-won\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filed a lawsuit<\/a> against five ad networks in 2019 \u2013 Fetch, BidMotion, Taptica, YouAppi, and AdAction Interactive \u2013 and won.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Uber claimed that its ads were not converting, and ultimately discovered that roughly two-thirds of its ad budget ($100 million) wasn\u2019t needed. This was on account of ad retargeting companies that were abusing the system by creating fraudulent traffic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The extent of the ad fraud was discovered when the company cut $100 million in ad spend and saw no change in the number of rider app installs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Uber also won another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adexchanger.com\/mobile\/inside-ubers-fraud-suit-against-phunware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawsuit against Phunware Inc.<\/a> when they discovered that the majority of Uber app installations that the company claimed to have delivered were produced by the act of click flooding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Criteo: Claims sues competitor for allegedly running a damaging counterfeit click fraud scheme\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>In 2016, Criteo, a retargeting and display advertising network, claimed that competitor Steelhouse (now known as MNTM) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20160726005975\/en\/SteelHouse-Countersues-Criteo-Alleging-over-50-of-Company%E2%80%99s-Revenue-Comes-from-Fraudulent-Sources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ran a click fraud scheme against Criteo<\/a> in a bid to damage the company\u2019s reputation and to fraudulently take credit for user visits to retailers\u2019 web pages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Criteo filed a lawsuit claiming that due to Steelhouse\u2019s alleged actions \u2014 the use of bots and other automated methods to generate fake clicks on shoe retailer TOMS\u2019 ads \u2014 Criteo ultimately lost TOMS as a client. Criteo has accused Steelhouse of carrying out this type of ad fraud in a bid to prove that Steelhouse provided a more effective service than its own.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Twitter: Elon Musk claims that the platform hosts a high number of inauthentic accounts\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>In one of the biggest and most tangled tech deals in recent history, the Elon Musk and Twitter saga doesn\u2019t end with Twitter taking Musk to court for backing out of an agreement to buy the social media giant for $44 billion.<\/p>\n<p>In yet another twist, Musk has also claimed that Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/04\/technology\/musk-twitter-fraud.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hid the real number of bots and fake accounts<\/a> on its platform.
